The lower parking lot is pretty good sized and as long as it is not crowded you should be able to park there. Sometimes the parking lots fill up pretty good. It might be a good idea to call.
We have eaten at the top many times. On at least two occasions we were stranded at the top for a while, waiting for the wind to subside enough so we could come down. Once we were stuck there for over two hours. By the time the tram could run, the restaurant was closed and some of the wait staff rode down with us. Be sure to take warm clothing in case that happens to you.
We have been there also and got stranded at the top. They thought they were going to have to bring snow cats up the backside to take everyone down, so that's real good advice. I just couldn't remember anything about the parking lot. We were driving a std auto at the time.
How is it going at San Onofre? Lived in San Clemente for several years in the 70's. Loved the area. Did a lot of surfing with my sons at the beach there and at Trestles (the train bridge) just north of San Onofre. Got transferred to Denver. What a climate change!

Bill, Things are going very nicely at San Onofre, than you. Although the temperatures inland have been over 100 recently, we have yet to break 85. Most days are in the mid to high 70's with light breezes and some fog that burns off by mid morning. Campground usage is heavy as usual, but so far no major problems. There are very few places in the country where the weather is so nice year round. Tough duty, but someone's got to do it.
We spend most of our time here at the Bluffs Campground, but we hiked down to Trestles yesterday. That sure is a nice beach!
We did the tram and restaurant last year; didn't take the MH so I didn't pay attention to the parking. Be aware - the restaurant isn't called the "High Finance" because of the altitude, everything has to be shipped to the top (including water) by the tram. If possible, try to time your trip up during daylight, down during night. The view is spectacular.
As always watch how you park. I see MH's blocked in intentionally by auto nearly every week. I really like it though, when the MH occupants just go inside, start the genset, and out-wait the autos.

"As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances there is a twilight where everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air - however slight - lest we become unwitting victims of darkness."___Supreme Court Justice William Douglas

It probably depends upon the time of day and time of year. We left our RV and traveled by toad to the tram. It was a good thing that we did. There was very little available parking and NO parking for a big rig.
