We will be in Gillette Wyo. in a few days for the Escapade. After that we are heading to S.D. to change our residency.
Any suggestions for nice place to put stay for two or three weeks? We certainly want to be out of the Sturgis area before that event begins, but don't really want to stay in $45 dollar-a-day resorts either.

We do not have memberships to any resorts, nor do we have a generator on board for dry camping. Electric and Water is good, we can do without sewer for a week or so.

Any suggestions would be appriciated.
We do have reservations for 1 week in Spearfish city park.

Thanks

Barb

Near Madison SD is Lake Herman State Park.
Electric only, 30-amp.
Dump station and fresh water inside the park.
Two sections, what seems to be the newer section has very wide spacing between sites - but is in full sun.

Hi Barb,

We are staying in the Montrose, SD, City Park for two weeks. Price is $15 a night or talk with the Mayor’s office for a weekly rate. There is a dump on site, and hook ups include water and electric (two 50 amp sites). The town is tiny, everyone friendly, pool will be open soon (being re-done now) and the local grocery store has anything you would need. The owner, Ellen, is very helpful with any of your needs!

We love this park and stay here every year. Have been known to stay twice a year! Maybe see you here!

There is a nice COE cg at Pierre on the Missouri river, it is below the Oahe Dam, nicely wooded.

Where do you want to visit? SD is a pretty big state, Sioux Falls has several nice parks, Mitchell has the Corn Palace.

Safe travels,

We found Alternative Resources located in Sioux Falls to be very helpful with changing our registrations, getting our drivers' licenses, and registering to vote.

Here is an excerpt about the ins and outs of registering to vote:

VOTING

* Residency requirements for voter registration: NONE
* Must register 15 days before election
* Address requirement: Your Personal Mailbox Address does not qualify as a residential address.
(To vote you will need to specify a physical location in South Dakota i.e. a local motel or RV Park that is located within Minnehaha county. Alternative Resources recommends Yogi Bear's Jellystone Parktm Camp-Resorts, phone number (800) 638-9043 or (605) 332-2233, or the Comfort Inn, phone number (605) 361-2822, both are RV friendly.)
* Minnehaha County Auditor: (605) 367-4220

We'll be at the Escapade as well. Would be happy to help in any way we can.

You did not say where you wanted to visit? This park is near Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Custer State Park. They are an SKP discount and passport America Park, but I think only give 10% at this time of year.

There are campgrounds in Custer State Park

http://www.sdgfp.info/Parks/Regions/Custer/index.htm

and some National Forest campgrounds in the area, but I don't think most of them have hookups.

This campground is convenient for visiting the Badlands and Wall Drug.

Checkout this site for what others thought about these campgrounds and others in South Dakota.

Hope you have a great trip!

Thanks everyone for the good suggestions. During the week we are staying in Spearfish, we plan to change our residency in Rapid City. We will also have visited Mt Rushmore and The Crazy Horse Monument while on a HOP tour during Escapade.

We just want a nice place place to kick back and relax for a couple of weeks. We enjoy hiking and maybe get in a little fishing... We would like to visit Deadwood when we are in the area but other than that we are not looking for tourist type of attractions.

The campground on the Missouri river sounds like something we would enjoy.
Also the COE in Montrose sounds great..

Thanks
Barb

Broken Arrow Campground is one of the best in the area. It is only a couple miles south of my place near Custer. Only a few miles from Crazy Horse Mtn and Custer State Park. Its out of town and in a beautiful setting. Very nice owners, big wide pull thru sites. They have an ice cream social every afternoon.

Folks we send there LOVE IT.

If you go there, you'll see our 45' Burgandy Teton 5th wheel sitting on a little hill on your left.....as you go by.

Enjoy the Hills!! They are real pretty right now..

Thanks folks,
That sounds exactly like what we are looking for.
We will look for your rig when we are there. Smile

We were looking forward to seeing Deadwood, too, but were very disappointed in it. Most of the old, historical buildings have been given over to gambling. If you walk into most any building, in order to get to what it was you wanted to see (a restaurant, a clothing store, etc.), you have to first walk through the gambling area. IMO, they've totally ruined the historical feel of the town.

The only thing we enjoyed was going to the cemetary where Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane are buried.

Mrs. Barb,

I know that you said you are not interested in tourist attractions, but if the HOP tour does not include the night time lighting at Mount Rushmore and the laser show at Crazy Horse; in my opinion they are worth seeing.

Mrs. Barb,

Hi...I'm Pat -- Ms. Tetoner. Mike told you about the Broken Arrow Campground a little south of us in Custer. They have a website: Broken Arrow Campground and their phone number is 605+673-4471. It is a great place. There aren't any trees but everyone we send there for a few days ends up staying a month or so. The owners are really nice folks.

Mike did make one mistake, though. Our rig is about a mile south of Hwy 16A on the "right" side of the road as you go south on Sydney Park Road....not the left. Don't know what he was thinkingSmile

There are some wonderful hiking trails in Custer State Park. If you go to our Webshots albums, you'll see them all. Webshots Albums We hike every one of them every year and see something new and beautiful every time.

There are several creeks and lakes in the Park -- Stockade Lake, Sylvan Lake, Center Lake, Legion Lake are all close by for good trout fishing. There are pictures of most of them on our Webshots.

We love to hike and fish. Let us know when you get to town and maybe we can do some hiking with you.

Safe Travels..............Pat

I don't like to disagree with Pat's opinion, but I have a different perspective on Broken Arrow, and it wouldn't be nice not to share it. I stayed there last week based on recommendations here.

I think Broken Arrow campground is expensive, period, and definitely expensive for what it offers. They offered no discounts at this time of year and the daily rate was $31.50. The owners are the most cordial, welcoming hosts of any campground I've ever visited. But the sites leave a lot to be desired.

The sites are gravel, not level because it's on a hill, and there is only enough space on the pad for the rig. When you step out your door, you are on weeds/grass/mud. There is no space to walk on the gravel, and the sites aren't wide enough for my taste. The campground is nice and quiet and there are nice views of the Hills.

It is predominately a horse camp so there are flies. The only thing that makes this campground good are the wonderful owners, but because of the price, I likely will not stay there again.

Hi Pat,

I just wanted to let you know that we did decide to stay at the campground you recommended in Custer, Broken Arrow. You are so right, we love it here and decided to stay a month.
We arrived here last Thrusday, the 17th and as we drove up the road we did see your home and rig up on the hill. Smile All I can say is WOW. We are so envious. Your summer home is located in heaven. Smile

We were certainly going to figure out a way to contact you folks and maybe have a chance to say hi, but the funny thing is, you were here Sat. and we didn't know it.

How did we know you were here? Ray keeps in contact with a friend in California. He is a Newport Beach Police Officer who is a wanna be full timer. And guess what? He reads you blog and just informed us that the folks whose blog he reads is in our area. Too funny and what a small world.

Anyway you mentioned that you and Mike like to hike. Ray and I like to hike too. Maybe we can get together in the next three weeks and do that. We bought a pass for a year for Custer S.P. So far we have only gone into the part one day(yesterday) and drove the wild life loop. I've marked a couple of hiking trailing on the map that we would like to do, but of coarse we are not familiar with the park or the trails.

Hope we get a chance to meet.

Barb and Ray
