I've ridden Segways @ Disney World. There is a free demo ride @ Inoventions in EPCOT. For a fee you can sign up for the Segway group tour of EPCOT @ park opening in the morning.

Not using it as a toad, but what a great invention. Sue & I had the opportunity to use one for an hour & loved it!! It took less than 2 minutes to become acclimated, but we were wheelin' & dealin' after that. Most folks who have tried 'em love 'em. Unless, of course, you're the POTUS.
I'm surprised they don't sell more of them. Oh, they do sell them (POTUS) every 4 years. AND very expensively. <g> |

I'm usually not this outspoken, but this time I can't resist... Walking is cheaper and healthier.
Unless there is a disability issue involved, why would anyone want to complicate life with one more thing. An observation... They don't seem to be compatible with a walking crowd. Soon there will be a Segway lane at EPCOT. |

There is a company in Franklin, NC that gives tourd of the town and "greenway" next to the river. They use the Segways. Lots of the folks walking complain they are being run over by the Segways. Owners claim it's because the units are so quite that folks don't hear them come up behind them. Folks who use them said they would not have been able to have toured the town/Greenway otherwise. Lots of folks from FL are not used to the higher altitude and don't realize they will tire out sooner. Others simply have trouble breathing... and I don't think it's that high up... but I also remember it taking a week every year to get used to the altitude differences (sea level to 3,000 - 4,000 ft). As a kid I was definately in shape!

Lloyd, I'm not disagreeing with your comment but just offering a different view.
The Segway should not be viewed as an alternative to walking , but rather as an alternative to driving short distances. History has shown there is resistance to new technology. In the 1800's, portrait artists refused to accept photography as an art form. Recently, many traditional photographers refused to accept digital photography as a part of their field. Some ideas just take time to get used to. Maybe there should be a Segway lane in every city? Lorna,
The bicycle versus the walker is already an issue on many of the paved bicycle/walking trails in cities. I can imagine the ordeal of adding Segways to the mix. Rather than using sidewalks, could the Segway use the bike lanes that are on some surface streets? (Interesting question.) Perhaps the Segway riders can take a tip from the bicycle riders. Whenever coming up behind walkers where there may be marginal space to pass the walkers, I always say loudly, "Bicycle on your left." Some times it startles the walkers and one will move to the left. Be prepared. And always be on your guard if there are young children. They are highly unpredictable. NH2, If walking is not appropriate and for short distances (with no disability issue), what is wrong with a bicycle. I have no problem with new technology or the Segway. In this wonderful world in which we live, it is great that there are a multitude of products and solutions for all of our individual wants and needs. And if the product isn't there, some one will invent it. This reminds me of a recent visit to a large liquor store. One of the clerks was going up and down the aisles while sitting on and test driving -- a beverage cooler/ice chest. Then there is my signature sign off... Seems appropriate for the Segway rider. |

Tony:
Segway as a toad? Ours has a range of 9 to 12 miles and using it along a highway could be a little scary. However it could enhance your recreation. So if you want to walk or bicycle and your Partner doesn’t or can’t, Segway will take you where a motorized wheel chair could not possibly go. Off road Segway is our model and it truly is off road. This model was used in some very unusual situations. We used it to bring the cows back in from the 200 acre pasture, chase loose horses, cross potato fields caring a fishing rod and lunch, follow a fence line, ATV trails thru the back wood lot, and a Auctioneers platform. Where it won’t go, is up steps or a dirt pile at a 45 degree angle, this I know for a fact. It is the only time I have been dumped. We have never run out of battery power, nor have the batteries developed a memory, in two years of use. At 100 lbs it could be a little difficult to pick up and at 5K a little pricey. My wife can no longer walk long distances nor ride a bicycle, NOR THE SEGWAY. So I will start carrying it with us hoping she will get over her fear. I am not affiliated with Segway, just a driver, and it is always in balance. Trucken. |

Wish I could use a Segway to solve my mobility needs. Lloyd, you say that walking is "cheaper and healthier...unless there is a disability issue involved." Just so you know, those of us with disabilities are often the ones most drawn to alternative transportation threads like this. How does one know what is truly healthier for another person?
I tried a Segway and loved how it worked. We have considered if one or two would make sense for us. For us, the answer is "no," but it could be the perfect solution for some. I agree that it probably replaces driving or bicycling, not walking. Isn't it great that we live in a time when we have so many choices? The Segway is a ground-breaking new technology, quite literally a completely re-invented wheel! Cool stuff. -Louise |

Should anyone buy a used Segway, I believe that there was a software program that had a problem and there was a recall. I know someone that was injured because of a malfunction because he had ignored getting the update required by the recall. I am sure the information is available online if you do a search. Cathy

I love all the new technology and would love to ride/drive one...how would you carry them behind a 5'er? I don't see how we could carry them - in the back of the truck maybe, but then theft, etc. is a problem. I'd LOVE one...love to have the money it costs to buy a couple too!

MC;
Scott Bonis has two carriers for his Segways on the back of his small RV. If you look him up he will surely give you hints how to do this if you are really interested. Let us know! Tony Houseliver, |
