Hello
Can someone recommend a sewing machine that is either Non-Electric (even if old fashioned, peddle) or could be run off a wee little generator, please?

Seeria, where are you located? If anywhere near the US/MX border, you might consider going south to look for a mechanical sewing machine. Brand new treddle sewing machines are still sold in MX, in big chain dept stores like Coppel, Electra, etc. I got a kick out of seeing that, because I never thought about it before.... but, it makes sense to have mechanical machines in countries where not everyone has electricity. Bottom line is that I do know they are still being made.... and if you went to a store in the US, they might even be able to help you out by looking in their catalogs, or asking their sales reps. Good luck! Lee

Juki makes a 12V sewing machine. If that helps, PM me & I can tell you where to buy it. It is a commercial type, and last I looked was around a nickel.

Seeria,

I run both of my Bernina sewing machines off of my solar panels/batteries without any problems. A solar system is a good boondocking solution and requires no fuel other than the sun!

Check the amish areas for non-electrical things. There is a big store in the Shipshiwana, IN area - but I can't think of the name right now... Confused

Quilt Lady

I have a Bernina 440 and am wondering how to power it when we start RV'ing. What kind of Berninas do you have? What is your solar set up?

Thanks!

That would be Yoder's. You can still buy the treadle machines, but the ones I've seen are larger than what I would want in the motorhome. I have a new lightweight Brother that I just love. Whenever we boondock, we use generator power which will run it just fine.

Denny 1600,

I have a Bernina 440 as well as a Bernina 185E and an Elna self threading serger. I have 440 watts of panels with a ProSine 2.0 pure sine wave inverter and a Link 10 battery monitor and a HPV-22B Solar Charge Controller [from AM Solar]. We wanted no problem powering our computorized sewing machines, 2 laptops and our satillite internet setup. We have 4 AGM batteries [no maintenance]. We can run our microwave with this also as well as a Geo.F. grill. Just not the Air Conditioner but we try to stay north during the heat of the summer. The fantastic fans move a lot of air. I also use a Rowenta travel iron for pressing when quilting.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Cathy

We carry the little Brother SE270D Embroidery/Sewing machine in Ms Dolphin and wouldn't be without it. Weighs about 15Lb and runs fine on one of those Pee-Wee $25 100W Inverters.
