So, I know I'm walking amoungst probably the wrong age group here for this question, but are there any WOW players here.
I figure there may be some, I'm almost 50 and have a couple guys and one gal I play with that are mid 50's. John,
Until we had Hughesnet via Datastorm for a few weeks both my wife and I played WOW. Due to Latency problems we could not survive in the fights. Between us we must have had 18 characters between us and both alliance and horde. All is gone now, but it was a blast while it lasted. Hi Paula and Dick,
I wasn't ignoring you, I just thought I would give others time to respond. I'm not surprised at the lack of responses. We have found some parks have Wi-Fi that is strong enough signal and fast enough to support the game. But since the parks have limited band width, I have only played for short periods of time and early in the morning, before grandma and grandpa RV'ers get up and want to check their email. Thanks for the response. It sounds like when we are on the road, playing WOW will be a challenge. Cheers! FWIW, I played few MUDs (Multi User Dungeons) back in the day. Not in to WOW or other online games these days. Alas, no time....

You are right. Finding good internet access to play games on line can be difficult when traveling. We have never started playing them for that reason. But don't give up!!! There are some great RPG games out there that do not have to played on line. ENJOY!!

We play some of them (not WoW, we're anti-WoW lol). In-laws (in their 50s and 60s) play WoW still.
Right now we're looking into ways to connecting while on the road, but are taking a break from gaming the rest of this year. Warhammer... that's what we're waiting for. |

Just found this thread - sorry if it doesn't like being awakened
I'm also a WOW player, and was wondering what to do when I go on the road later this year. I was suspecting that the HughesSat solutions had too much delay for game playing, but are the EVDO /Aircard (internet over cell) solutions fast enough to support game play? I played WoW for almost 2 years, until just recently because I switched to an air card for internet. With the aircard i could still play but mostly just out solo'ing, not 5 mans (maybe, depending on latency) but I was at the point in the game our guild was running the final 2 25 man raids, and being in a raid with 24 other people (and its must to use voice communication, ie Vent,) the aircard just doesn't have what it takes to be able to do that. I thought I would try to still raid when I found a good wi-fi location, but thats probably not really going to work. I still have my account, will see how it goes.
But on the note of MMORPG's, I started playing EVE Online, a big space type MMORPG, its fun and so far has worked great with the aircard, so I can still get my online gaming fix. Nice thing is this game doesn't require anywhere near the grinding WoW does, completely different type of character progression. Any WoW players interested, this is my best toon: Shardkeeper This message has been edited. Last edited by: schu, |

Thanks Schu. I did look at EVE, looks interesting but how are the group dynamics compared to WOW? I've never been very excited about PvP on WOW, but seems like that's the main thrust of EVE.
I expect that bandwidth on air cards will improve over time. Seen any improvement? Is Verizon still the carrier to have for B/W? Dave Dave 99 Foretravel U270 36' 02 Subaru WRX 14' |

I hardly PvP'ed in wow either. Eve is a PvP game in general, but they actually break it out and you can play without ever pvp'ing. The way Eve does it is they have a security rating for every system and the scale is 1.0 - 0.0 and any system with a rating of .5 or higher has Concord protection (think police). If you are attacked without provocation, Concord comes and destroys whoever attacked you. Now that doesn't mean there isn't a chance you will die before Concord gets there, but pretty unlikely unless the person attacking you really wants to get you for some reason. So you are pretty much out of pvp if you stay in .5 or above. Now .4 and below is anything goes, there is no Concord protection, but of course all the best loots and mining and money making is in the low sec space. You can play your whole time without ever going into low sec, I have only been in low sec a few times.
As far as grouping goes, you form "Fleets" with other people just like a party in WoW, but Eve doesn't have "instances" or raid type encounters, or progressive questing. Eve has Missions, from level 1 to level 5. 1's are the begginer and 5's you need a good fleet to be able to do, plus 5's are all in low sec space so you have that to contend with. If you want to be a mission runner in Eve, then what you are looking to do is be able to solo lvl 4 missions, good money and loot on 4's. That is where I am at now. Eve has alot to do, the economy is huge, you can be a miner, explorer, mission runner, pirate, bounty hunter, manufacturer, trader or any combination you can think of. There are no levels for characters, any character can train any skill to do anything in the game. Training a skill is as simple as buying a training book for that skill and telling it to start, you can only train 1 skill at a time and the training time is in real word time. Depending on the skill a level could take just minutes to weeks for high level skills. This training continues whether you are logged on or not, so unlike WoW, you can create a pretty darn good character without ever playing, just keep logging in to keep starting new skill training. Of course you need some cash to buy the training books. The game is played with all players playing on one server at the same time. The game is free to download for mac, linux and windows and free to play for a month i think. Plus they offically allow you to use in-game money to purchase game time cards, so when you start to get a good in game revenue stream, you could actually play the game for free. I was pleasantly surprised, I was playing the other night and in a fleet with 4 other corp members (guild) and I logged onto vent and had no problems playing eve and communicating with vent. Wasn't sure the aircard could handle that, but it did just fine. I have Verizon for voice, but since they instituted a 5gig monthly cap on their aircard, I decided to go with Sprint for that. They are still unlimited. |

Schu,
Thanks for the great intro to EVE. I missed a lot in browsing the site, looks like. I'll definitely have to try it before I get on the road. On 5 gig cap - I read about that , but didn't seem like a major hurdle, but realized I don't know how serious game playing impacts data usage. I'll have to monitor it when I play WOW next. Thanks, Dave Dave 99 Foretravel U270 36' 02 Subaru WRX 14' |

Hi All,
Well after reading about EVE for about 5 hours I am trying to convince DW to try it with me. Thanks Shu for the info. Im thinking of her being a miner and I a fighter of some form. Do know that you can try three professions. It does sound very interesting. Is anyone doing it with Hughes.net or other Satellite service? I wonder about the upload/download issues. I'm SO glad this thread got revived. Greg is already bellyaching about missing Warcraft when we head out for Gillette in mid-June. He's going to miss out on 4 weeks of playing. He's ramping up a character to level 70 as I type this. We should start a BOF for Wives of Gamers

Maybe we should decide on an RV server and start an RV guild... Oh wait, WOW doesn't work on the road. Well maybe an RV fleet in EVE. Maybe we can find the right WOW wintering site and get them to upgrade their wireless...

WOW!!! LOL,
Glad to see this thread grow some legs. I was thinking I would be the only one out there full-timing and trying to do some gaming. I'm a little disappointed with what I'm hearing about wireless types of connections having latency problems. We have 3 years before we are both retired, maybe that problem will be fixed by then. Thanks for the info on EVE, I will check it out. It would be fun to have an RV guild of some sort. PvP in WOW is really the way to go. I used to hate PvP, and only used PvE servers, but once I made the change and was committed to it, I wouldn't go back. I'm glad PvP on WOW isn't like Ultima Online where you get looted when you are killed. That was a bummer!! Angie, My wife would agree with you on the BOF for gamer wives!!
