There was a post a little while ago under the internet on the road section.

I also read this one:http://escapees.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/765603761/m/9451027413

I had not really taken much interest in the technology until reading about it that day, appears a "little" rough on bandwidth for most wifi hotspots in campgrounds or evdo setups by cellullar,m(although they do advertise it for PDA devices to receive slingbox internet broadcasts on) but for a long term fulltimer with the possibility of DSL or cable broadband, would this be viable for a group of friends to use?

A few questions I have about it initially are:

Does the slingbox border on the file sharing fiasco that limewire and napster users are getting chased down by lawsuits for copyright violations?

Is there a risk of the same thing developing with the slingbox as it gains in popularity? I'm imagining some cross between a Napster and Vonage fallout when it catches on, possible? paranoia/synical on my part?

I've read a few forums referring to slingbox swaps and usergroups, which made me wonder how viable it is for a single cable tv connection to serve several people with just dsl or broadband?...

Hello,

I'll take a stab at your questions. As an owner of a Slingbox for over 2 years, I absolutely love it.

Does the slingbox border on the file sharing fiasco that limewire and napster users are getting chased down by lawsuits for copyright violations?

No. Unlike those that you mentioned, your Slingbox is just for your use. The personal ID number is sooooo long, that unless YOU hand it out to others, you won't be found. You ALSO have a password, just in case (extremely unlikely) you are hacked by another person. Your personal use means NO COPYRIGHT infringement.

The answer to your other questions are the same. No and no. The Slingbox essentially "slings" some "material", whether it be music, video, DVD, satellite, to another location for you to use. For example, I have my SLingbox connected to my Tivo satellite receiver at home. I travelled abroad to France for work. While at my hotel, I conected my laptop to an internet hotspot, accessed my Slingbox from across the globe, and watched a movie I had recorded before I left. I could have just as easily watched my DirecTV from there too.

And, in case you aren't too familiar, you need a Slingbox, a high-speed internet connection (at home), preferably a static IP address, and something to view the Slingbox on, like a laptop or PDA/smartphone, etc.
