If considering a Vucube, don't forget the physics of a smaller dish usually results in lower gain which results in weather interference (pixelating picture loss) earlier in bad weather. Of course, with some weather even a huge dish will drop out the picture.

Thanks Jack. I copied the pictures of the 4/3 legged PVC bases. Going to make one Saturday. I just posted that site for information. Thought that was the one you were talking about. CW used to carry that one but not any more.

I too built the inverted stand out of PVC pipe, cheap and works great, I just have it for times when the roof mounted dish is blocked.

check it out on my Projects page.

Just finnised my stand. I made mine so the dish set normaly right side up. Stand breaks down to 4 parts for storage. Cost $10.00 with some wing nuts and a few bolts to replace on the dish.

Might use 2/3 times a year.

I have two tripods that I use. For HDTV I use the one from H&G Enterprises and for Internet I use the setup from Maxwell Satellite. Both systems use construction tripods and that makes a tremendous difference. The key to getting signals quickly and easily is to have a perfectly level platform for the dish to be attached to. The construction tripod does this very well.

My two cents worth,

Curt

I started this thread back in November, and we finally got DirecTV service at home in May and bought the CW ground mount dish. We are on our first trip with the portable dish and the DVR and a standard satellite receiver from the house. DH spent our first day with the system getting it wired through the coach and switch box and learning how to aim the dish using the signal meter. Today, the goal was to get the bedroom TV set-up to receive the satellite. Had the usual challenges of getting the TV out of the built-in cubby hole and discovering only one coax cable and only one single-plug power outlet. (We had just been at Monaco for a factory tour we were anticipating seeing dual lines for TV/cable and satellite and a double plug we had seen on the production line. -- NOT!) We thought we had all our connections squared away and the TV back in the wall when we discovered that the sat signal we were receiving was actually mirroring the front TV and somehow the back receiver (which we were sure was working fine earlier) was "out-of-the-loop". Get to do it all over again tomorrow. Mad

We also had a frustrating day of trying to get the signal around trees in the relatives yard.
We know we'll get it figured out -- but we sure can say we've been spending a lot of time with our new satellite system - oh, well, one of these days we'll be giving advice to newbies on what NOT to do.

Problem solved: the Winegard Portable Satellite ground mount comes with one coax cable that we were connecting at the rear storage bay external connector that fed to the front entertainment center and the Winegard video switch problem. We had a DirecTV service call this morning and the solution was to run a second (additional) coax from the dish and connect it to the CABLE input next to the SATELLITE input in the storage bay. We then use the switch box to control the various video sources. Yea, we can get two signals on two TVs and still record with the DVR. No charge for the service call to the rig or the extra 25' of coax the tech provided. While here he also programmed our remote so we only need to use one instead of two.

Update: We finally did get the DNS activated after an additional 14 days from being told we were approved. The problem was the service call changed our "service address" to Oregon and that no longer matched our DNS Affidavit location from CA. Customer Service changed the address and activated it while on the phone.

I am also a fan of the PVC mount. I have used one for 5 years and it has never blown over even during three seasons in the RGV. Easy to set up, don't have to "plumb" anything, just drill a few holes in dish for water drainage during rains and you are set to go....
