I tried to set up a new brokerage account today, and received the following message after completing the online process:

quote:
To open your account, [Brokerage] conducted an identity check through a third-party vendor. During this check, we learned that the address you provided is a mail receiving/forwarding service or post office box. We are required to have a physical address on file for each client.

WHAT TO DO NOW:
Please respond to this e-mail with your current physical address. You can also fax this information to the attention of Account Resolution at xxx-xxx-xxxx or mail
it to:

It's the first time I've set up an account since we hit the road full-time, so I didn't know if this is the norm today. Is this just Homeland Security at it's finest?

More than likely. Anything to do with money is getting scrutinized more and more. I have read stories about how banks aren't even honoring the $10,000 limit, instead reporting to the Gov even when you deposit lesser amounts.

If you can, don't use the PMB designation. Use '#' or something like that.

We've used Fidelity Investments for years now and they didn't blink an eye when we used first the Escapees mail forwarding address and then our South Dakota mail forwarding address.

While we haven't tried to start a new brokerage account, we *have* applied for new credit cards since 1998 when we first started fulltiming, the last one just last year, and haven't had a problem using our mail forwarding address.

When I inquired about opening the most recent brokerage account, I told them about fulltime status and that I didn't have a regular residential address. I informed them of the Alternative Resources address and they were not all that concerned. What they did want to see was some kind of utility bill or bank statement that would verify that it is really my real, bona fide address.

Probably no help, but thought I'd share my own recent experience.

Good luck,

Brian
