Read update - no longer need help Thanks!
I'm trying to do my first find-it-myself, boondocking in the Coronado NFS area around Safford, AZ. I even used Google Earth to look at it and THINK it's okay. BUT, I just turned onto hwy 366 that goes into the area and they have BIG warning signs that no vehicle over 40' should continue on. I pulled over into the turn-around area to look at everything again. My total length is over 40' BUT, that's motorhome/car combined. Are they talking per single vehicle? (Yeah, dumb question...but you never know till you ask..) I'll be online a bit longer, it's already 2pm and I need to either continue inward or turn around and head to Wal-Mart or the Casino outside Globe. Thanks for any help! This message has been edited. Donna,
If it's not too far to where you're planning to stay and if it's not too much trouble to unhook the car & hook back up in order to drive the car to your spot and back, that's usually the best way to know for sure. Sometimes it's more of a recommendation than anything, but it pays to be safe. For example, there's a road in Big Bend with a big warning sign for vehicles over 30' (or something like that) and we saw a 45' tour bus at the other end of it! Since your tow bar lets you "bend" it probably wouldn't be a problem, but don't let us get you into trouble! When in doubt, check it out. I think you'll be okay, but it would be a good idea to unhook the car and drive in first to be sure.

Thanks folks....I lucked upon a local bicyclist and he warned me away. Said it's one of the twistiest roads around...many, many 10-15mph hairpins upon hairpins. I took a few photos and headed into town.
Soooo...I headed to the Wal-Mart in Safford where there was supposed to be overnight parking. Being Friday it was busy-busy-buys. I tried two spots..that was when I noticed the No Overnight Parking signs. Since it was only 3pm rather than try to find out if that was true, I opted to head to Globe where I am now dry camping (free - the RV Park dry camp, $5 night, was full). Live & learn....LOL! Thanks again.... This message has been edited. Not sure how it compares to Google earth but Google maps with the satellite photo option are a wonderful way to preview your route. Aside from corners and such that might prove to be a problem at larger zoom levels you can tell pavement from gravel.
A bit of cloud cover on some of the road and the eastern end isn't available at high resolution: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=az+366...55,0.011351&t=h&z=17 Stan, E-Mail: skp-forum-01 at stanmiller.info |
