what kind of mileage could one get with DT 466 230 hp 6 spd od ,410 rear ends.??
i know the hp is on the low side. But only pulling 10.000 lb
thinking on a 6% grade the speed would be 55 ??
or am i way off on the speed.

Mileage, depends a lot on how you drive and your tire size, 4.10s with 22.5 wheels is pretty good with 19.5s it might be a bit high. We had low profile 22.5s and 4.44 gears on our rig. Tire diameter is a big deal on MDT/HDT trucks and needs to be considered along with the differential gearing and transmission top gear.

Since we hung up our keys they have forced everyone to ULSD that has knocked off some mileage from what I got, for starters I'd plan on 8-9 towing and 10-11 bobtail and you'll be close.

Another thing to be sure of is the 6 speed most 466-230s came with just 5 gears programmed and needed a reprogram to get the 6th enabled.

With 10,000 behind a 230 you'll probably end up in 4th on a 6% hill, that is what usually happened to our 275 with 16,000 behind it. If you have to slow for corners and such you might end up back in third and have a bit of trouble getting back to 4th. When that happened to us I just set the cruise and locked the trans to 3rd until we topped the hill. With our gearing and tires we could just touch 55 in 4th and about 35 in third.

Thanks Stanley
thanks for your in put, the truck im looking at has 19.5 tires and does have 6+1 spd OD.
does 65 mph at 1950 rpm around 73 mph top.
a 390 rear end may do better on lowering the rpm but not good for the hills.

Ah, it is a manual then, I wasn't sure from your original post and I've seen several with the Allison automatic described in a lot of confusing ways. You can adjust my speeds/gears to match your transmission, on mine 4th was direct, 5th .75 and 6th .65.

Ways I've seen the Allison described:
Six speed - that's accurate,
six speed with the top two gears being over drive - very good,
six speed with two overdrives - a bit confusing,
five speed with overdrive - still confusing.

My IH had a top speed of 83 or so which made cruising at 75 bobtail doable, you'll get a lot of noise and drop a good bit of mileage if you run at 70. Your torque peak is probably around 1500 and there or a couple hundred RPM higher is probably your sweet spot for fuel mileage.

With the 230 having the lower gearing is probably not a bad idea to get the power you need

I haven't tried my 4700 yet with just the trailer. but grossing around 48k to 50k I got 5.5 to 6.1 mpg tops! 6+1spicer man, T444E (PowerChoke Diesel) 4.10 rear 11R22.5 tires. 79mph flat, 7%grade was 14mph in 3rd gear! too big a step from 3rd to 4th!
But your 466 will do better its 20 more hp and much more torque. I have a friend that has one he can only make about 62mph but passed me on every hill with the same load. I am going to be leaving in a few weeks with my Intl and it's new bed and will be about 18K lighter so I will let you know how much the difference is. My trailer weighs about 25K and 6k is on the kingpin.

HEY Woodchip! My (S1854,aka4900) born in 1981 rebuilt/reconfiguered in 1985 is a whole different critter. Truck is set up perfect to "HAUL",was horses now 40' Alfa Toyhouse.
Total gross wt.= 33,000lbs. Full 500gal,water,LP,240gal.fuel,bikes,batteries,fire wood=600lbs.and other junk. Has a DT466 w/Fuller 6+2 manual trans.rear split axel,210HP. old rotary style fuel pump. This truck is really "SUPER".Runs 65/70mph.@ 1300/1400rpm in 6th gear high, just HUMS along. I had it DYNOed last year. The no's. were: (I forgot I'm running 24.5 tires all around). The nos.== w/210hp. rated engine gives up 190hp. and 837'lbs. torque AT THE PAVEMENT. With this truck I can run from CHICAGO, IL. to LINDEN, NJ. at 65mph/ make all the hills on I 80 between here and there at 55mph. or better, if I'm paying attention and get ("10-10.5 MPG") I've been told at MIDWEST FUEL INJECTION that I could pick up more HP if I put on a little larger turbo and the next size larger injecters. I've been told I wouldn't have to mess with anything else. COST, $700.00= Turbo, $60.oo each for the injecters, plus labor, appxly $300.00. Total maybe $1400. I probably would have done it, but I've moved "to the dark side" with a Kenworth T-2000 and 500 HP. So, my humble MDT is now for sale. Oh, well!

Truck driver, YES it is $10K. I have to admit I havent worked very hard at selling it!! I dont know, I quess I just dont want to see it go. Short of and (inframe) it's a new truck!! International parts= $1800, Labor? depends on where the dealer is that you get it done at.Some dealers are at $65. others are $125 hr. The dealer gives a 1 Year unlimited milage warrenty. Rated at 30 hrs. labor to do. I do have a fresh dyno on it, and "NO" it does'nt need rebuilt. I always figure a worst case when I buy something,if the engine or trans fall out of it can I get it fixed and still have value in the unit? ANY OTHER ?? E-mail @ www.roadfitter@msn.com

.....roadfitter:....ain't none of my business but we have people looking for a 6 person cabs in the recycling yard all the time....[GOV surlpus]....and If that cab is solid without any rust through/rusted cab mounts- it is worth $10,000 all by itself....the rest it just something to throw in to jack up the price some....they are very hard to find around here....Gov does still buy them for very restrictive specification and usage but they are like reasonably priced fancy women...''ya ain't going to find too many at that price''....again the cab would have to be primo-but get it out and cleaned up open up floor mats and doors so a buyer can see the insides-"you done got a winner there"......geofkaye

Geofkay, I'm dissapointed I did'nt get to meet you at the "MATS" in Louisville last March! Back to my crew cab. What you say is very interesting indeed! My crew cab is "very cleen" no rust through any where, w/solid floor, posts, window frames. I do have a little perrifferal rust here and there, but nothing that cant be taken care of! Last year the guys from "Crome Shop Mafia" where all over it. For the most part I'v only spent money on the mechanical stuff. Bringing everything up to snuff."IT IS A LOOKER"! Yes it is still for sale, questions, www.roadfitter@msn.com.
