Since by far the most popular states for domicile of full-time RV people are Texas, South Dakota and Florida, can you tell us how the typical rates compare between the different states? Is one state usually in a lower rate than the other two, or is one in a higher cost area?

I can tell you the exercise we just went thru, and one of the items we checked was the cost of our auto insurance.
We are currently legal residents of Florida, and have been for 14 years. We have also purchased a summer home in the Ozarks of Arkansas. Our Florida auto insurance for 2 cars is $1400/yr, and the same coverage in Arkansas would be about $800. Big difference!!!!! on edit: BTW, that's with the same company AARP/Hartford. Sorry Don, I must have been out tilting at windmills
The decision for state of residency usually isn't which state has the least expensive insurance, but rather which has the least TAX impact. But, if you make the decision based on insurance cost alone of the three choices presented Texas and Florida are about an even call. South Dakota will be the most expensive. The difference between TX and FL is the state required coverages. FL has a number of uninsured, underinsured, stacked and non stacked coverages that you must purchase if your tow vehicle is registered in FL. Fewer and less expensive regulatory coverages in TX. All states have some required coverages. If you have a vehicle registered that state will require certain mandatory coverages and/or fees. An example here in Michigan is the Michigan Castastrophic Claims Association fee, $123.00 per vehicle. As Bobcatkitty points out in his post TX, FL and SD are not the only choices for a home state. Most insurance is rated based on the garaging state of the vehicle. Garaging state is tough to determine with Skips, garaging state is where you park it tonight right? Full timer Skip insurance coverage will likely be rated based on the registration state of your vehicles. It is possible to have a vehicle registered and insured for State A while your mail box, voting registration, and other correspondance is in State B. The combination of those two addresses is going to impact your tax obligation. So I have come full circle back to my orginal comment. Insurance cost may not be the best deciding factor when considering residence and registration state. |
