We are fulltimers and live in a 38 foot 5th wheel with a Welsh Corgi who has a thick coat and sheds year round. Any suggestions on a vacuum cleaner that does a good job on picking up dog hair in carpet? Ron Bohlae.

Just bought a Dyson DC18, couldn't stand the built in model any longer. This one does a great job, and it is smaller than the other Dyson's.

After traveling fulltime with 2 dogs we decided that the best thing to do was to replace all carpet with smooth surface products. we did this a few years ago and love it.

We have started brushing the hair up with a common scrub brush before we vacuum. This removes a large amount of dog hair that would otherwise go into the vacuum bag. We use a Panasonic Vacuum which is light, powerful and does a good job.

If you have the hair problem on furniture, dampen your hands and rub over the area several times...works great on cat and dog hair. The damp hands "clump" the hair making it easier to pick up before vacuuming.

Ron, .... on one hand ...

if you find any vacuum cleaner that will pick up dog or/and cat hair...

buy two or them and please post the name of the vacuum so I can get one..

My ex-wife had one of those fancy vacuums that are sold by "door-to-door" salesmen and cost $3000.00 and I have had several sensibly priced vacuums over the years... and absolutely none of them would pick all of the hair..

Art has the only positive solution to getting rid of cat and dog hair....

get rid of all carpet and replace it with something like linoleum, tile or wood flooring.

and then on the other hand .... Smile

My house was so bad that I got rid of all cloth covered furniture and replaced it with plastic furniture like vinyl couches and chairs that can be taken out into the yard and washed with the garden hose..

I got rid of all cloth fabric bed linens and blankets.. replaced them with a plastic drop cloth from the local paint store..

Then I got rid of all clothing that is made of fabric and started wearing only plastic pants and shirts.. the black colored plastic makes a fair tuxedo, if you don't look to close.

This seemed like the perfect solution .... but after a while .......

I realized that the plastic clothes came out of the dryer all wrinkled and could not be ironed, so I got rid of them.

Then winter came and the plastic bed linens were not very warm, so I got rid of them

Finally I hit upon the perfect solution for getting rid of cat and dog hair on everything....

I got rid of the animals... of course this made the wife mad...
so she said if she could not have her 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 hamsters and that stinking bird .. that she was leaving also....
.................................................................................................................
you know..?... the dog was not really that bad, I kinda miss him.....

TWO CENTS WORTH
The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved.
The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference.

I have found that if I use the dogs brush (one with the tight little metal posts) on the carpet, it picks up most of the hair. But any strong vacuum with a brush on the end will work fine. I use a small canister Shark and for the most I have been happy with the job it does with the hair...although you do have to clean the filter off a lot.

We have two cats and was using an old Panasonic sweeper that we stole from our motel when we owned it. It began bulling my wife so we bought a $49 Noni-Lite Hoover from Walmart and it picks up better than any sweeper we have ever tried. And with the motel we had tried a lot of them.

After trying for years to pick up dog and cat hair with dozens of different things, we just discovered that "Swivel Sweeper" does it well and quickly, and it just sits in the corner with no cord needed. The best until now was a stiff rubber comb-like device which you sweep over the rugs.

Good luck

The best results I have found is using on of the rubber brooms you see sold on infomercials and at some of the RV shows - here is a web site I found for one of them

http://www.sweepa.com/

There are plenty of lookalikes out there - I think the one I have now came from Wal-Mart.

To use it for pet hair, you pull it toward you, making short strokes - the amount of pet hair that it will pull up is amazing. It's the only thing that really works well on the carpeting in the back of my SUV.

House vacs, like uprights, take too much storage space in our 33' 5ver.

This Dirt Devil handheld vac works Dirt Devil vac . It works on 110v current for more power to the brush in the head. Pulls dog hair right out of the carpet. The vac accessory doesn't work so well, but I just use a broom on the vinyl.

Downside - getting down on the floor to clean. But not much floor in a trailer anyway.

If not for this vac, we couldn't keep this nice little hairy Corgi.

We have a dyson in the sticks and bricks that works well. For reference we have a border collie/blue heeler mix, a miniature aussie, a min pin, and two cats one of which is long haired. It doesn't take long to fill the hopper with hair, but it works good.

I have also found vacuum cleaners useless for this. I go with the rubber brush and wetting my hands to run over the upholstery.
also believe in the "if you can't beat them join them" approach to life and have removed all the carpets from and have replaced them with rugs that can be laundered.
