I saw them at Bed Bath and Beyond last week. I used something like them last year with some success, at least my salad stuff seemed to last a day or two longer than usual.

They say you can tell your getting old if you're afraid to buy green bananas.

I'm not happy with the bags. They are narrow and do not hold much. I think they are a waste of money. |

After reading all the positive posts, I went ahead and ordered 10 medium and 10 large bags.
All I can say is that they are worth having. My head of lettuce lasted for about 2 1/2 weeks in the bag. Usually it turns brown after a week. I find they work well for bananas, but when I see dampness in the bag, I wipe it out and reclose the bag again. I buy about 10 bananas per week, and they used to be brown and overripe by the third day. Now at the end of the week they are still yellow and firm. Can't stand ripe bananas. They make me gag. |

simmi,
Since you use a lot of bananas, how about trying an experiment for us. Buy a bunch of bananas and place one in a Debbie Meyer Bag, one in a plain paper bag, and leave one stored as you usually do. Make sure all three are from the same bunch and are the same size and apparent ripeness. Keep them all in exactly the same location. Then monitor all three and report back on how they do. If there is some other way bananas are sometimes stored, a test sample like that be good too. Maybe just with a paper towel wrapped around one, or perhaps in an air tight baggie? The week long comparison should also be done at least a couple times to insure that the results are consistent. Without a controlled test like this, there are too many variables to make an accurate assessment. I would be very interested to hear the results. 2000 Volvo 770, 525HP/1650FP Cummins N14 and 10 Speed Autoshift 3.58 Rear 202" WB, 2002 Teton Aspen Royal 43 Foot, Burgman 400 Scooter |

Ok Rif, you're on.
I still have a few bananas to use up. But when I buy the next bunch, I will try your experiment. I'm also curious to see what happens. Will report later. |

Where do you find the LARGE bags. All I can ever find are the small and medium, mostly at Camping World.

Not sure if you meant me. However, I'll answer. I googled "Debbie Meyers Green Bags" and a Canadian site for her website came up. They sell medium and large there. I imagine her US site would carry the same. |

I haven't heard of the Debbie brand before this discussion, just the Everfresh brand. I will take a shot at getting this brand as suspect they are basically the same thing.

I bought my Green Bags from Harriet & Carter, and the bags do not have holes in them. You are not to use twist ties with them just fold them down, twist ties poke holes in them.
They work really great, especially for bananas, they will keep all week in the green bags, I put them on the counter and put all the other fruits and vegetables in the fridge. Dr. Kool makes fresh bread in the winter time, and we are going to use them for it as well. It's good to be able to use fruits and vegetables a long time without spoiling. Okay, I've done the experiment. Bought slightly green bananas on Saturday (Jan 12). Left one out in the open, one into a paper bag, and rest into D.M. bag. The paper bag and open storage bananas have ripened considerably and are soft and unappetizing. The ones in the Debbie Meyers bag are still quite firm with a tinge of green on the peel. Guess which ones I'm eating? |

Simmi,
Thank you so much for those results. Now we all have an honest comparative test we can refer to. I have not been able to find anyone else who has done this kind of comparison that included a control group. It looks like the debate about whether or not they work, at least for bananas, is over. 2000 Volvo 770, 525HP/1650FP Cummins N14 and 10 Speed Autoshift 3.58 Rear 202" WB, 2002 Teton Aspen Royal 43 Foot, Burgman 400 Scooter |

How timely! I just found/bought some of the green bags today. I found them at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

I ordered mine from Harriet & Carter, and they are wonderful....you can use them over and over again too....I am buying a lot of fresh vegetables, bags of salad, and especially bananas, and I don't have to worry about throwing them out before they spoil.
It sure has saved us a lot of money and preparation....I grill vegetables at least 3-4 times a week, and we like a banana in our cheerios almost every morning, (I use to only buy 2 bananas at one time because they would be black 2 days later, but now I buy them by the bunches and they last all week..... Try them you'll love them as well Wicked Wanda FT Wannabes Dr.Kool, charter member, Mickey Mouse Club Wicked Wanda, lifetime member, Peanut Gallery |

Anybody using the bags for vegetables such as lettuce, cilantro, bell peppers, etc? Fruits other than bananas? We are staying in Montana for the summer and will be 85 miles round trip to the grocery. I am trying to go into town about every two weeks. We can use frozen vegetables towards the end of the two weeks but I would like to keep the vegetables we buy edible as long as possible. Can we leave stuff like lemons, tomatoes, etc, out of the refrigerator but in the bags to keep them fresh?
Had not heard about the bags prior to this post so am grateful for the heads up! |
