I would start with workamper news.

Ken & Karen, Jack's advice is mine, also. I speak up today to welcome you to the SKP forum, where you'll find all the help and advice you could possibly want, and sometimes more than that!, and where you'll also meet new friends as you start out on your adventures. I hope you find what you need here, and welcome you to join in any thread you wish to.... sharing your knowledge and experiences with the rest of us.

Here are two sites to get you started:
http://www.workamper.com/WorkamperNews/WNIndex.cfm http://www.workersonwheels.com/ Also, since you're interested in specific states, check their state park systems' websites. You might also be interested in hosting in a national park campground or a forest service campground. (Either/both of these would likely be through a concessioner.) Also, if you just google "camp hosting", you'll get many references! |

I would recommend contacting the National Park Service directly. They have many positions open for campground hosts. I got my current hosting position simply by being a camper in Zion and asking about becoming a campground host. They needed one and I got the position. I really love my job here in Zion and being in this place. I expect I'll be doing more camp hosting. If you like you can see my blog at: http://www.lightcurve.com

We have just completed our first summer has campground hosts and throughly enjoyed the experience. We worked four days 9-3 and four days 3-9 and four days off, full hook ups , laundry, propane and a cash allowance , great people to work for too, try iRvings rv park and campground in BC, ( Canadians only)
Change of subject, Why do people list everything but the kitchen sink? and ever seen a motorola system mounted anywhere else other than the roof? |

If you are planning to volunteer, the national clearinghouse for all government postings is:

We've hosted in National Parks for 15 summers and 7 winters. The first time I did it, I wrote to the 'Volunteer Coordinator' at several parks. One phoned and that is the way we got started. We've made many good friends, both park employees and campers. I'd recommend volunteering to anyone so inclined.

I would also recommend contacting those states and counties directly. Our first park host job was for Ventura County, CA. Just look up state park websites, they usually all have applications you can print off their website. I am a member of workamper but personally never used their listings.

We have been full timing for several years, and volunteer a lot. If you are interested in the National Park System, you might start out with general info under www.nps.gov . If you know the park you are interested in, then you can be more specific. If the park has a two word name like Theadore Roosevelt, use www.nps.gov/thro . If is has only one name, like Yellowstone, use www.nps.gov/yell . We have had some great times in the National Park System. Good Luck.

Now is the time!! If you have been trying to get into some of the best sites in the Oregon State Park System - and you are willing to pay the price of fuel to get there, you will likely never have a better chance than right now!!
We have some friends that have never worked in this system before, and just got a month each in two of the best locations in the system. Apparently, due to the advancing fuel prices, many folks are calling to cancel their committments for hosts of various types this season which is starting right NOW!! I don't have the info to reach them, but should not be hard to find. Central location for the whole system is Salem, Oregon. Good luck! We would be headed there ourselves, but we are already committed to host at Roosevelt Nat'l Park in Medora N. Dakota. We will be there all summer, so stop by and see us. Just off I94, about 25 miles east of the Montana border - you will be glad you did! Have fun this summer!! |
