I was curious what a good / fair price was for a used Onan generator. The local phone company is selling their service trucks which come with a 4300 Onan generator. The trucks go up for auction the end of the month. I'm not sure what the age of the trucks nor the generators would be. I was told the phone company really don't put long hours on the generators. The truck I looked at today was a 1992 ford F-350 with a service body / covered, with the generator. The generator looked almost new - the gentelman told me a truck like his goes for around $ 1000.00 at the auction. I figured I could sell the truck and keep the Onan. What's your opinion?

I'm young enough to learn from the older generation, But old enough to be a good example to the younger generation.

Search Ebay for generators to get an idea about prices on used units.

As a former telephone cable splicer, the Onan on my company F-450 would run hours on end depending on what power was needed for and what was needed to do the job. Also our Onans had no low oil shutdown on them. Thus a re-ring and bearing job was necessary ( a common occurance) and I always said our mechanic could do these blind folded. Sort of buyer beware. Now if you could get to the operator of a particular vehicle, I'm sure he would shed some light on the condition. We would do that quite frequently. Also don't ever buy an air compressor that came out of a telephone exchange where it was used to pressurize cable! Just my two cents worth.

As bobsallyh said, beware. Think about it!! Those generators were not put in those trucks 'in case'.
Most of them I saw were working 8-12 hours a day on the splicer's and lineman's trucks in order to provide lights, ventilators etc in the field.

The Escapees Discussion forum has moved to a new home! Please use www.rvnetwork.com to access the new forum, or click on the Discussion Forum link on any Escapees.com webpage header. Thanks!

All user accounts have been moved to the new board, but each user will need to go through the lost password process to re-activate their username. You will have to click on “login” and then on “Lost Password”. Enter either your forum login name or your forum email address. The forum will email you password recovery instructions. Follow these to get a temporary password, then log in and change your password to whatever you like on your profile page.

Once you are able to log in, you should find that all the current topics are where they belong, and you can begin learning about some of the new board's features. If you have questions, post them in the "Learning the new forum" area and we'll do our best to help. The new board is very similar in functionality to the old one, but some things will seem quite different at first. There is a pretty good help function on the new board. Just click on "Help" in the upper right corner of the page header.

In most cases, the best way to learn the new board is to experiment! If you are not sure what something does, click on it! You'll notice that we have created a test area where you can post tests to your heart's content. We have also created a “Learning the new forum” area so that users can assist each other in learning the new board.

All users will need to set up their avatars again. For those users that we host, there is an avatar set called “Old forum user avatars” that contains all of the custom avatars currently hosted by us. Just browse through it until you find your own picture, and select it. (Please don't select someone else's picture just to be cute!)

If your avatar is currently hosted somewhere else, you will need to have that URL available in order to set up your avatar on the new board. If you prefer to use a stock avatar, we have a large assortment of new avatars you can choose from in the avatar Base Gallery.

The old forum remains available for login. Even though there are no active or visible forums here, you can still log in and access your profile pages to recover any info you need. This old board will shut down permanently at the end of September.
