Hi all! We're outside Cody for a few days, and wondering if we'll have any problem driving through Yellowstone NP to West Yellowstone.
We're tentatively planning to stay on the west side of Yellowstone for about a week in order to visit the western Yellowstone attractions after we do the eastern half, and are hoping we don't have to go clear back up to I-90 West just to drop back south to a campground west of West Yellowstone. Thanks, Jim.
In addition to suitability of the road itself for HDTs, I was wondering if you encountered any resistance from the powers that be while driving an HDT in the park. Sign heading west from Cody specifies "no truck traffic allowed in Yellowstone." Obviously they don't want a truck route going through the nat'l park, but should we expect a hassle driving through because we "look like" a commercial truck? BTW, we're planning to do the same thing as you -- taking the motorcycle to do the sights. Did Beartooth & Chief Joseph Scenic Highways a few days ago...absolutely gorgeous! Dave We were not paid any attention going through in our 610 and at the time a Raptor toyhauler..the only thing I remember that was an obstacle was the ticket booth ..we had to use the outside lane ...

Dave and Renee, I don't have an HDT, but you will have no problem at all. I've seen numerous ones the last five weeks. All supplies to the General Stores, Xanterra, etc. are deivered by 18 wheelers. Gas and diesel are also delivered to the park service stations. The "no truck traffic" sign you are referring to is for haulers trying to take a short cut. I was just talking to a fuel hauler the other day that was dumping fuel beside the park we are in, and he pulls the tanker and a pup tanker to some of the park gas stations. Topfuel, an HDTer that is on here, can give you good info on this subject. I passed him in the park one day as he was going to Bakers Hole CG just out of W. Yellowstone. He then headed to Cody, I believe, enroute to the Escapade. Not sure how he went to Cody.

Thanks for all the responses. Looks like the only thing we need to worry about is the ticket booth roof! (Unfortunately, Juggernaut, SD stopped registering HDTs as motorhomes just about the time we became residents
Appreciate all the help (had to laugh, though, at the number of replies directed to Dave... Been in and out of the park many times with mine without a second look. The roads are fine if you're used to narrow 2 lane roads. Have fun and if you come out the south and go east stop at the Dubois, WY KOA. We'll have a drink and discuss world problems.

Renne, you will have no problems getting into the park, or driving through the park with your rig.
Best route is to come to the intersection just past Fishing Bridge, right to the Canyon Junction, left to the Norris Junction, to the Madison Junction then on into West Yellowstone. You will move kind of slow through the park. Speed limit is 45 in most places, but will vary from 45 to 25. A bison or bear can get you stopped for 1/2 hour or so. We call em Bear Jams, or Bison Jams. We also get Elk Jams, Deer Jams, etc. You get the picture. We've had some MDT's and HDT's here at Fishing Bridge this year, so don't worry about it. Bob, who's still working here at Fishing Bridge RV Park in the paradise called Yellowstone. :-) |
