Any ideas to source a trailer for a MP3 500 would be appreoiated. We want something between a lightweight 2 wheeled bicycle trailer and a fullblown motorcycle trailer like Bushtec. Leaning more toward the bicycle trailer style with a 200lb payload. We don't think we will use it for long trips, just 10-15 miles roundtrip to the supermarket at say max speed of 50mph.

Thanks John but Overkill is not buying the fuel for himself or the new scooter. I need a lightweight trailer with a capacity of 200lbs or so. The trailers you suggest are better pulled by a Goldwing or an Ultraglide

This is one of the smallest Motorcycle towable I know of. A little too heavy to pull by bicycle.

Motorcycle cargo trailer

I wouldn't use a bicycle trailer as most will not mount to a motorcycle easily.

Hey Virge.
Harbor Freight sells a small trailer frame you put together yourself and no welding required.. I've seen a few built this way by bolting a "Sears" storage box to them then adding a set of running lights. Use your imagination to make it pretty. (Bob from Wilderness Silver Springs, FL)

Mark,
Yours was the best solution so far until Bob came along with the assemble it yourself Harbor Freight idea. I think that this may be my answer..........

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. Looks like the $199.99 Harbor Freight idea will best suit our needs for right now.

Now, I have to find a hitch for the MP3.

Thanks again to you both.

Virgil, if you took delivery when expected you have had the MP3 for week or so. How about a first impressions report?

Got the Mp3 500 unloaded Tuesday so we've been riding only 4 days so far. Very easy to ride, no gears, just crank the throttle. Took me about 2 days to get used to stopping without putting my feet down but once I got used to doing it, I can do so about 98% of the time. Occasionally, I still wobble pretty badly at a traffic light waiting for the speed to slow down enough for the 3 wheel lock to engage and have to put one of my legs down.

Pick up with both on it of us is PLENTY. 500cc engine is enough for us. Jo still goes "woo" when I take off hard from a stoplight but I suspect that will stop when we get a backrest or "topbox" for her to lean back on.

With both of us on it, we think there is plenty of torque left to tow a small trailer with a weeks worth of groceries or the dog.

It comes with no windshield. I rode it only once above 45mph before I ordered the tallest windshield available. (The winter windshield you see connected to the top is actually only available for the 250 right now according to the dealer.) I didn't like riding with no windshield over about 45mph. All that said, it rode at 55-60 just like I remember my old Honda 550, true and steady. It corners just like a regular motorcycle. I'm no expert but I could not tell any difference. In articles some of the "performance" riders complained about the brakes. With Jo and I both aboard, I stopped with ease. Good enough for me.

Mileage is another issue. Some were saying 55mph. We're not there yet. With 200miles logged so far, we're only about 40mpg. I also read on www.modernvespa.com that at highway speed it will burn MORE fuel and around town it will get the best mileage. Also, they say when I get the windshield installed the mileage will go up. We'll see.

All in all, we are very pleased. We've been running around Gettysburg and over to Hanover, PA for 3 of the 4 days and have really enjoyed parking in any "nospace". At the grocery, I park up by the building insteal of waaaay in the back with "Overkill". It is fun to ride/drive and we would do it again.

Thanks for the info. I've been wanting to hear from an actual owner. It certainly is an interesting design and I'm glad to hear you are pleased.

I am a long time participant in the BurgmanUSA Forum where we have many scooter riders with other than Burgmans. There are Majesty, Silverwing and other makes represented, but I don't think there are any MP3 owners. Of course, it's like it is here if you don't own a Volvo; you would be in the minority, but I'm sure every one there would love to read this report and hear updates as time goes on. They are a great bunch of guys and remind me a lot of the posters here on Escapees. If you get a chance pop over and chime in.

ghillie, et.al,

Here is a link to a website where the fellow bought the 40" wide Harbor Freight utility trailer with 12" tires for about $250 and cut it down to 34" wide with little effort. Then he added a sears cartop carrier and ended up with a nice looking motorcycle trailer for what appears to be less than $500 using today's prices.

I'm going to try this trailer at 40" first but it that seems to be too wide, I see now that it can be cut down nicely.

Thanks again to all who contributed. My parts are ordered.

AND you can use it as a wheelbarrow if not on the road. Even has a cover, just add handles.

WELL ALRIGHTY THEN! I got a chance to search and see what you are talking about now.. interesting scooter/bike/trike/whatever.. I also had a 550/4 honda in the early 70s.. loved it.
The company I listed also has a much smaller trailer available but not what you are looking for at all... I see what you mean. sounds like you found what you need.. good luck.. keep us informed the site it looked at said 60 mpg.. I kinda doubt that also..
John
