Very well said, Lee!! Thank you!!
Sorry, I have been up to my chin in paperwork since everyone is trickling back from Escapade so I missed this thread. Geez, shame on me!! Jofox, If I were you I would review some of the other threads in the HDT forum to see if you can find any regarding Mexico and HDT information. Of course, there are several frequent HDTers out there posting all the time. Just look them up and private message or email them. I am sure they will not mind. We are all here to share our experiences. Hugs, Kellie |

Lee I replied to a PM by JoFox on my experinces last Jan. We were not able to get in. We spent 2 days in Presidio Texas talking to the Aduana and the Consulate. What we told off the record that the NAFTA agreement had a pilot program that allowed Mexican trucks into the US. That program was stopped early by the US. Needless to say no trucks larger than a 1 ton are allowed in Mexico. We are working with a friend in Chihuahua who is trying to get us permission to get in. It's not looking very hopeful. We volunteer at an orphanage in the Chihuahua area during the winter. I do know the NAFTA will allow trucks to go both ways in 2012. When I have any new info I will post it. If we get permission I think it will be a special case. Right now it does not look that is going to happen.

Well... I have a 1-ton. I wonder if the Mexican law allows a truck to pull a trailer > GVWR on the door sticker? I guess I COULD pull with my 1-ton, but my trailer will gross out at about 22,000 lbs. I guess if Mexico wouldn't mind neither would I. I bought the HDT so that I didn't have to worry about weight limits. So... not to change the thread, but does anyone have experience pulling a BIG 5ver into Mexico with a 1-ton?
I also appreciate all the feedback I am getting here.... and YES, Escapees "IS" the one stop shop for anything we need concerning info for RV'ers. I will PM a few of you soon about this Mexico thing..... just kinda busy at the moment. I VERY VERY much appreciate Mrs Jacobs reply.... and will be PM'ing you soon for more info..... Hope you won't mind. |

Did Mexico caravan Feb 2007. Weight restrictions don;t exist there. They load a truck till it will not move then unload a litte. Double 48 foot trailers on HDTs with no jake brake. Went thru central part around Gaudalhara (sp) with high mountains. Tailer gunner on trip had 2005 Dodge with haeavy fiver and blew automatic transmission.

JoFox I don't have any experience pulling my fiver with a 1 ton. But I do know Aduana said that was the only way I could get in. They don't care how big the trailer is but they do care how big the truck is. If I would have had my 1 ton still I would have had my son bring it to me so I could get in. You will have no problem getting across with that set up. The only stipulation is the truck and trailer need to be registered to the driver. If you have not been in Mexico yet you will be amazed at what you see on the roads. They sure don't have DOT inspections.

My only experience is in and around the Chihuahua area. The roads are decent. They are narrower than we are used to here but the condition is good. They have been putting in a lot of new roads. If you get off the main hiways it's anybodys guess as to what you might find.

A non vehicle factor has reared up big along the border. Jaurez City is a war zone, not only are the druggists killing the police and army, they are kidnapping for ransome and ATM money anyone that looks like a good candidate. My nearest neighbor is a former genuine Mexican with an American wife and wonderful family. He is in the freight brokerage and logistics business and gets across the border a lot. Now he is even worried about going into Jaurez. Watch out for those things too.

We haven't even tried to cross with the HDT since we were turned around in Feb 07. We have been making trips from Tucson to the boat in the Jeep. A friend in San Carlos who bought an RV parking spot has sold his MDT (they can't get in either) and bought a 1 ton PU to haul his 5er back and forth.
If the Mexican bureau of tourism can't "fix" the problem We will spend our money in the USA. It's a shame as we have enjoyed wintering in Mexico since 1998. Scott, Barb, & Tinkerbell 95WIA tandem driver N-14 super 10 2006 Travel Supreme, Jeep KJ towed |

I think some of you are confusing NAFTA regs with Tourist temporary importation. One has nothing to do with the other. OTR HDT's are commercial vehicles and under specail circumstances they are admitted. I have seen a whole fleet of Pepsi HDT trucks with Antique Pepsi vehicles on flat beds. Some big corps like GM, Microsoft and others cross with promo vehicles. The HDT's in this forum are not the same. The regs state that you are not allowed with a HD vehicle. Some do get across as the rules are loosely enforced. I tried to get Sonora Tourism to get a ruling but with no luck. It may be possible to get into the Free Zone in Sonoar as no permits are required. But once you try and get past Guaymas a permit is necessary. The feds in Mexico do not acre about RV's. They want the fly in tourists. Like cattle at the feed lot. Fly them in, fill them with food and liquor, sell them blankets and trinquets and fly them home!

I have spent a lot of time talking with the Aduana personally and through a Mexican friend of mine. The Aduana does not care if the truck is commercial or pulling a camping trailer if it is larger than a 1 ton it is not coming in. The rules changed Jan. 1, 2008. Robertito got in with his truck in October of 07 and was still there in Feb. It took him 5 hrs to convince them his truck was a motorhome. The NAFTA agreement has a lot to do with why we can't get in. There was a pilot program for 1 year that allowed Mexican trucks in to the US and US trucks in to Mexico. There were no takers from the US but trucks from Mexico were coming here. Our government stopped the program before the year was up. Needless to say the Mexicans will not allow any truck over 1 ton into the country commercial or not. There may be some special cases with promo vehicles but we sure don't qualify for that. My friend in Mexico is working with Aduana to see if we can get a special permit because we volunteer at an orphanage. At this point it does not look like that is going to happen. We have submitted all kinds of paper work but they are still saying no. Moisheh if you know of someone who has gotten across with an HDT since the first of the year I would like to talk with them.
