Finally got two sets of commercial 7 prong trailer connectors. One set for active use on the tow and trailer and the other for conversion to huck up to rv style plug if necessary. Is there a correct way to wire these to present the least amount of problems if someone would plug in a trailer to a regular commercial hookup? I will cary a conversion for the trailer to tow with me just in case I have a break down. It probably wouldn't make any difference since I have the conversion for the plugs with me but knowing how my luck goes I like to avoid any "what the hells" I can.

7 Way female & male receptacle wiring diagrams for commercial trucks/trailers
& light duty trucks, TT's, fifth wheels and other non commercial equipment:

NOTE: There are two wiring codes for different types of 7 pole plug and socket sets.

Most RV's use the RV wiring code for the type plug/socket that has 6 flat contacts surrounding
a center round pin. Semi's and commercial trailers use the ASME (American Society of Mechanical
Engineers) type 7-pole plug sets. These plugs have 6 round contacts surrounding a center
round pin.

Mike, this should help you out also.

This is how we did Charlie's "2BTRVLN's" 770 wiring conversion so that he can still tow a commercial trailer if need be or his 5er with a simple plug and unplug of the appropriate ASME plug in his electrical compartment....

NOTE: - We were short 1 commercial ASME socket at the time we did his electrical work so I used a standard 7 blade plastic RV socket that we had on hand at the rear of the frame so Charlie could be on the road without further delay.

We also placed a new ASME socket on the rear of the cab to enable him to tow a commercial trailer.

ON A SIDE NOTE" - With this setup, the use of two short homemade pigtails would allow Charlie to tow someone else's 5er that is wired with the standard plastic RV style 7 blade plug or for someone else to tow his 5er if they only had a standard plastic RV 7 blade socket on the rear of their toter.

Mike, here's a Link to all the pics I took of Charlie's electrical conversions on his 770....

A NOTE TO CHARLIE:

Charlie, I still have some items that you asked me to order for you so let me know if you still want them or not.....

Thanks for all the input. Jon looks like you have it set up on Charlies truck that plugging in the correct plug either leaves it stock or switches to RV. Pretty slick. When you plug the RV plug into the recepticle did you pay any special attention to the position of wiring or just make shure it would line up with the commercial plug on the trailer.

Mike, here is another schematic I had drawn when I did the other one but it seems I had failed to upload it to my WebShot's account.

I believer this will answer any questions you have about how the dual trailer wiring capability in Charlie's 770 works.

Charlie, I just read your PM and will get back with you in a short, short.

No problem with me holding or waiting on shipping or reimbursement for the items until you and Amber return to the RVG.

On a side note, sorry to hear about all your problems in the last month or so with your truck and 5er......

Jon thanks for the drawing. I just got the plugs on using the rv pattern with green at the top of the commercial plug. I am so impressed with the job you did for Charlie have decided that after returning from this trip will redue my trailer wiring and try to copy the set up you did. The wiring schematics are great and when I am not in such a time bind will study them before I tackle the redue. Hopefully I will not need to much coaching. Again thanks.

Mike, the wiring is pretty straightforward but if you run into any problems or have further questions when you start the project fire away and I'll be happy to help you anyway I can.

BTW, have a safe and enjoyable trip.....
