Between Ellensburg and Yakima, along the Yakima River (SR-821), there are several recreation areas. The nicest of them is Big Pines and costs $5 per night (BLM, so US Citizens with a Senior or Access pass can stay for $2.50).

Our 2004 Benchmark Washington State Atlas has the area listed as "Squaw Creek," but the sign as we passed said Big Pines...changed, I'm sure, for PC reasons.
