Garnet Ghost town 50 miles east of Missoula Montana. Way in the Mountains. I passed up an opportunity to visit this place two years ago.
Has anyone here visited Garnet? Thanks Trucken. |

Quite a few years ago my wife and I went there. It is at the top of a very narrow windy dirt road called “China Grade”. We got up to the ghost town at dusk. A man came out and said, “You can’t stay here.” He was pack’n a side arm and a rifle. Also, he had an aggressive German Shepard dog.
I asked if we could just stay the night as it was getting dark and I didn’t want to go back down that icy steep dirt road in the dark. He said NO and insisted we leave. Lori was so scared (and she doesn’t scare easily) she walked down the road in front of me to show me were the road was. We never did get to really see it. Mike (& Lori) |

Thanks D8WKND:
We were staying at Bears Mouth and the owner of the campground invited us to go as I had no toad. Your reply makes it interesting. Thanks Trucken. |

We were there in June. It's out of the town of Phillipsburg. We stayed at Phiilsburg Bay campground, about 15 miles heading to Butte. The campground is forest service and dry camping but very beautiful. All paved and large sites. We drove our toad to garnet. The road was dirt and washy. We enjoyed the ghost town and took lots of pictures. This road is only for cars preferably high clearance. We have a 4x4 suzuki.
Enjoy the ride Livin ez on the road Sam & Carolyn craftykidd |

Are we talking about the same place. Garnet Ghost Town is North of 90, at Bearmouth, or South of 200, near Potomac. I see one near Phillipsburg, but it is call Granite ghost town. 8DWNKD: Is the road doable for a Class A. Did you come off 90, or 200. My buddy is a cop, and thinks meeting Rin Tin Tin, would be interesting. If you like Ghost Towns, there is one just east of Austin Nevada, not on the map. Old mining camp. We got there at dusk, and was going to spend the night. Light came on in the valley, like a flashlight, it would go out and reappear 100 yards away in a second. Wife got the jitters, but I was the brave one, we left. Thanks Trucken. |
