I'm currently at Augusta Tree Nursery. Nice place but after only a week, I'm soooo bored. They don't ask much and there's nothing at all in less than 6 miles and at least 25 miles to places to hike and enjoy the scenery. I travel alone and need more mental stimulation. Can folks recommend places to visit that provide some mental challenge for the position and are in close proximity to things to do so I don't have to drive so far to be entertained or engaged in hiking, kayaking, etc. I go to Kentucky in November thru first week of Feb, so I dearly need ideas for next year and maybe even this September to first week of October between Virginia and Kentucky. Thanks for the input.

I am not sure of where you are and what you like to do but here goes.
1. find a hobby. a. photography and software. lots of fun to clean up pictures and make postcards and greeting cards.
b. I took up beading which is easy but time consuming and a little costly.
c. biking around the area instead of driving.
d. do a wood working or wood carving project.
2. drive the backroads or (bike them) and see what others never see.

Try a National Wildlife Refuge. They'll keep you busy for sure and they need the help.

Ditto what Judy said. Nat'l
Wildlife Refuges will usually provide you with lots of outdoor activity opportunity and hiking the trails at most give you fun but also opportunity to do some trail maintenance.
Back Bay NWR ( Va. Beach, VA.) is wonderful and they need a volunteer spring thru fall to man the public canoe and kayak launch. While it feels remote you are minutes from so many things to do that you won't see it all in a year!!!!! Call Walt Tegge and tell Linda & Ron sent ya!!

Thanks for the ideas. I definitely have NWRs on my list. I'm not the craftiest person, though I brought my router with me to play around with. I just get bored easily, so need new things to see and learn all the time. I can't survive a place where its just peaceful and relaxing all the time. Although I can enjoy a good hike with lots of waterfalls, I also need to be a bit frenetic at times. Smile All ideas appreciated. Thanks for taking the time.

Could I suggest that you get yourself a 125cc scooter to run around on, 90 mpg and up to 65 -70 mph. Get you there in good time and very little gas.

Thanks, but I have a 250 enduro that gets slightly more than 90 mpg and can be both on and off road. It's been getting lots of use. I travel with it in my living room until I get to where I'll stay. I'm getting the impression that either very few volunteers use this discussion forum or most folks want to be relatively inactive during their travels. I'm begging now. Where are the intellectually stimulating, busy places to go. Anyone? This is my last plea, then I give up and will look elsewhere...

Barbara,

I don't have specific recommendations for the states you mention, but in general most state parks and national parks have positions that involve lot's of interaction with people. Jobs often include working in an entrance station, visitor center or as a trail guide. You might look for those kinds of volunteer positions if it is people involvement stimulation you are looking for.

If you are not able to stay active in the position you currently have you may just need to try another. I have never had a volunteer coordinator tell me I can't put in more hours than the minimum required. Smile
