I've seen requirements for a newer than 10 year old RV for workcamping positions. Does this apply to volunteer positions as well? I would like to volunteer mostly in state and national parks or at historic sites, the types of volunteer jobs Kirk writes about on his website. I want to buy a Safari Trek with an Isuzu diesel engine and as far as I know, those were made between 92 and 96, so all are now older than 10 years. Does anybody out there volunteer with an older RV?

In the nine volunteer assignments I have been involved with, the age of my RV was never addressed. Sometimes they have asked about the length and number of slides, but that's all.

I've never heard of or seen age limits of rigs in public facilities. Private campgrounds can have such regulations, but public facilities would have major discrimination problems if they tried to impose such restrictions based on age alone. As long as you volunteer in public facilities, I don't think you will ever have to worry.

Even most private campgrounds will take rigs older than 10 years IF they look decent. The purpose of the requirement for a picture of the rig is to see what it looks like. I've seen some that were less than 10 years old look pretty ratty. It says big things about the prospective employee.

While I'm only on my second month of Oregon State Parks volunteering, and inspite of my RV being 20 years old, I can quietly reveal that I kinda wish this state's parks volunteer leaders would be a bit more insistant on a reasonable maintenance by the volunteers of their rigs and spaces around them.

We have one here now (right up front) which is really quite a disgrace. It's old, brokedown and falling apart, has a jack under it holding up the engine and transmission, and has lots of unsightly clutter all around it. Nice guy that owns it, but it isn't a good sight for guests.

So, no... Oregon parks and probably many other state parks seem to have a fairly lenient policy about the volunteer's RV age (and condition).

Please pardon me if my comments come off sounding somewhat prejudiced or discriminatory.

Thanks so much for the replies, everybody. I am looking forward to fulltiming and volunteering in the best small used RV a little money can buy! ...and I promise to keep it in good repair and not keep clutter scattered around my site...

Been fulltiming and hosting since 1993 and have never heard of any hosts being questioned about the age of their rigs. That's not to say it couldn't happen.

We've seen parks that were limited to recent-model, upscale (read: prohibitively expensive for us) motorhomes. Kinda leaves us out as guests, with our 28' 5-year-old travel trailer. Don't know if we would be allowed to host, given the size of our rig. (But hey, that's okay. Our truck and trailer were bought new for cash. There's something to be said for not owing anyone a cent on our home.) It's a moot point anyway because we never host in private parks. Always state or national facilities.

Hello
I have to agree with the others, Shirley and I have been hosting in state parks in Calif for the past six years and age of RV has never been mentioned. I have even seen a host in a tent. As has been said it is the condition not the year.
The size can be a challenge in some places. I shoe horn a 40 pusher into a place that is very small.
Just buy what you are comfortable with and have fun.

We have an older motorhome and have had no problems hosting in Georgia or Florida State Parks. They ask about the size so they can get you in the right site. We've seen everything from tents to $$DP'ers.

The only place that I ever had any problems was in private campgrounds...and some of them were REALLY weird in their requirements. This happened numerous times over the years...but, even more in the last couple of years.

**Uh, how old is that trailer?**

I think it's a 71 model. I'm still refurbishing it...I put in all new applicances...and hardwood floors....Satellite TV, Satellite internet, new heaters, airconditioner, and even a dishwasher. I got an appointment this fall to have the any dents repaired...then, they are gonna strip it and polish it to within an inch of it's life..and it's 33 feet it ain't gonna be cheap. This is my retirement project. I bought this thing to make it what I want.

Why Is there a problem?

**Well, we don't allow any trailers older than 12 years**

DOOD! It's an Airstream! They don't old...they just keep getting better!
