Hi Everyone,

We thought we would let everyone know of our experience this week in Denver.
We stayed at Cherry Creek State Park. We have stayed there on and off for the last 10 - 12 years.
At the entrance gate they directed us down to the office to book and pay for our site. $22.00 for a full hook-up site. When we got set-up and read the camping rules on the form they gave us. (We always read the rules!)We noticed a daily charge of $8.00 per vehicle on top of the camping fee of $22.00. We were supposed to go back a mile to the entrance gate and pay $8.00 for our MH and another $8.00 for our toad. ($38.00 total). Each day when we re entered the park we had to pay the $8.00 entry fee for the MH and toad. The toad is one thing but to pay another $8.00 on top of the camping fee for the MH is a bit rich.
Now at 5.00pm a ranger came to our MH door and threatened us with a $50.00 ticket if we didn't immediately go and pay our daily fees. She was rude and abrupt. (Office closed at 8.00pm but that wasn't good enough for the ranger). (We had a daily pass for the toad but not the MH). We observed her going to other RV's doing the same.
The volunteers at the park are embarrassed at the way the park rangers are treating the campers. A 5th wheel and truck combination is also regarded as two vehicles and must pay $22.00 + $8.00 + $8.00.

If you are going to Denver I would not advise you to use Cherry Creek State Park.

But that means that for us to stay there, it would cost us $38/night!

Camping $22
Motorhome 8
Towd 8
--------
total $38 for one night is more than most of the commercial RV parks in that area!

When we are in Denver (Westminster) to visit our kids we stay at the Westminster Elks. Under $20 for full hookups. Both 30 and 50A sites.

Boy, that’s not what their website says; at least I don’t see it.

Hi All,

It's not the fact that the total price was $38.00 that upsets us. It's convenient to all the Denver things we want. We were not trying to avoid the fee. We were just unaware of it.
What upsets us is that we were not made aware of the charges until AFTER we had paid for our site. And then you have to pay twice for your RV. 22+8. The person at the entry gate made no mention of the day fee for each vehicle. He just told us to go to the camp registration office.
My understanding is also that you have to pay the day passes each day. So you have to be there to do it.
Our Campground Guide, (Trailer Life Directory), does not mention a day use fee. Also to have a ranger threaten us is not good PR. I was ill in bed at the time and she was very heavy handed toward DW and was not prepared to wait.

Day use fees are common in State Parks. But this one is not made public. We feel sorry for the volunteers who cop the abuse from campers.

Avoid Michigan State Parks also. They want $27 camping plus $8 vehicle pass daily and only have electric. RV parks close by are generally much better bargins.

If a fifth wheel and its tow is charged at $8 each then by definition a popup trailer and the tow vehicle would get charged that $8 each as well.

There is definitely something wrong with someone's interpretation of the camping rules.

There are private campgrounds that are only a few dollars more than that $38.

Keep the balance --- Lloyd

Just to let everyone know, this is the policy at ALL Colorado State Parks, not just Cherry Creek. If you plan to spend an extended time in Colorado State Parks, you might be able to buy an annual pass to cover the daily fee for $60 or so - not sure what it is this year. And you can buy the annual pass for the second vehicle for a nominal fee. Of course this only help if you plan to spend a couple of weeks in the state parks. Jefferson County Fairgrounds near I-70, on 6th Ave. on the west side of Denver has water and electric hookups for $20 a night and a dump station. A much better deal when visiting the Denver metropolitan area.

That is one of the problems we have encountered with State Parks as we've traveled - long on prices, short on amenities. The other problem is that a lot of them (in the east, anyway) are not laid out for big rigs. They have low hanging branches, small unlevel sites, and, on weekends in the summertime, lot's of kids, dawgs, and roudy neighbors.

But not all State Parks are the same so you do have to do some research. Tennessee's State Parks have no entry fees and reasonable rates with fairly decent sites.

Hi All

No one has mentioned it, so figured I would ask. Does the Federal Golden Access or Golden Age (including the new versions) help in any way at the CO parks? They are recognized in some states.
