OK. Maybe I am way behind the curve on new stuff, but my wife and I just discovered Redbox and love it. You can get current release DVD's for about $1 and you can return them to any Redbox location. There are thousands of Redbox locations accross the US, including most McDonalds (they are part owners of the company) and many supermarkets.

We have been using Redbox for about 6 weeks now and really think that this is the best bet for fulltimers...convenient loactyions, inexpensive rental fees and you can return the DVD's to any Redbox location.

What do you think?

How does it work? I noticed it says "$1 a nite"... does that mean if it is 3 days before you can get it returned to another Redbox location that it will cost you $3 (for the 3 days you had it out)? Or $7 if you have it out a whole week?

It states "no late or hidden fees", but does that still mean they charge $1-per-nite? Or how does it work?

Nancy, yes it is $1 per night. If you keep it a week, you pay $7. There is a maximum charge of $25, so after almost a month you just get to keep the DVD.

You don't have to return it to the same kiosk where you rented it, so you can pick a movie up in one town and return it in another.

We've now seen them in most of the WalMarts we've visited in the last month, and rented a couple of movies.

At $1, if the movie stinks, we can just turn it off! Smile

We usually overdose on RedBox, especially when one is in walking distance. We are in Vancouver, WA for a month and have two within walking distance. That is pretty rare.

Redbox is truly a great bargain, unless you have to do a lot of extra driving to get to them.

I have noticed a few more competitors around, some for $1.50.

We've used it twice with good results and also read the entirety of their rules. They do what they say but do not accept any excuses.

Sounds a lot more convenient than Netflix.

I was surprised to see so many responses to my post. I was not even aware of Redbox until about a month ago (we don't eat at McDonalds).

We are at the Escapade. We returned a Redbox in Gillette, WY that we rented in Butte, Montana. It cost us a whopping $2 because we kept it for an additional day. So far, I am very impressed with the system.

BTW, you can search online for a location and find what movies are in stock at that location. I tried this in Butte. I searched online and found that "The Other Boleyn Girl" was available. I walked 2 blocks from the Wal-Mart "campground" and rented the movie. When I returned to the RV I checked for movies available and found that Boleyn Girl was unavailable. Pretty nifty!

I sure wish I had been an original investor!

We've used it for a couple of years now, the only thing to be careful of is to make sure the screen goes back to the beginning so the guy behind you doesn't get to use your card!

My kids had a bad experience, their card was hit multiple times for the same movie after they returned it but I think that's rare. We still use it.

Another option for Longer term folks is
your local library (YMMV) but most public
libraries now have a DVD section, we have
netflixand love it, but its not the solution
for everyone. Our library card was free,
and CDs and DVD's are free to borrow. Some
libraries charge a minimal
fee for a card.

Minimal Fee.... like the $75 that Macon County NC charges. We need a "national" library card... accepted at all public libraries!

David,
yes I agree some are crazy fees I most
recently lived in Utah, and while I was
in the same county they had "city" libraries,
our fee for not living in the city would
have been over $300.00, you can bet we
didn't get a card.
But we are in Beaufort county, NC and card
was free, and the card for Pitt County
would be $20.

So YMMV (your mileage may vary)
