Not sure if these folks are SKPs or not, name isn't familiar, but here's a news article with a positive view of fulltime RVers.

As much as I am an advocate of the right for a parking area owner to allow RVs to spend a night there, I am always amazed by the way that most of these stories are done from the prospective of the owners of larger, more expensive RVs? Wonder why then never talk with the folks in the 30' or less, or the ten years or more old RVs?
I think that these stories that are always based upon the larger, more costly RVs are part of the reason that so many no-RV owning people believe that everyone who is in one is wealthy. Linda Payne, wife of Norm who posts here at times, was recently interviewed also but I have lost the link to that story. (Their RV is over 40' also.) I agree with Kirk, how about presenting a little more reality to the residents of Casper, WY, and lots of other places, about the majority of us who are out here on the road. For example, when the Escapees Class of 2007 gathered in Quartzsite this past January, the majority of us were in 5ers that cost less than $100,000 or used motorhomes. Sure, there were a handful of the big, fancy rigs -- maybe 5 out of 30.
Unfortunately, this is an example of what I consider a "disease" in our country. Vastly too many of us only want to hear about the people who are doing better than we are so we can aspire to catch up with them -- not because they are healthier spiritually or emotionally, but "it's all about money, money and more money." One of the real attractions of the full-timing life for me is that it's not about the accumulation of things; it's about getting out of the rat race, re-assessing our values, living much more simply. The news media does usually focus on the extremes. I agree with Mac that the article was pretty positive. I for one am glad it wasn't showing an RV in a Walmart parking lot with the slides and awning out, lawn chairs around the BBQ and folks sitting sucking on a beer.

Well, those folks might be sucking on a beer but it feels to me like we're getting a bit of whine here with cheese. It was a nice article - who cares what they were driving?

Anyone notice that the article stated "3 million full-timers" - WOW.
I believe that the correct number is closer to 300,000. Dave & Dolores 30' Airstream Classic Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins CTD |

Just before we started FTing, so about 11yrs ago, there was a Univ. of Mich study released in which, I believe, they estimated the full time RVing population (and census undercounted) in excess of 1,000,000. There are a lot of vocations that really lend themselves to FTing - disaster relief, insurance and aid teams, circus and traveling amusement workers, pipeline workers/welders etc., workers on road projects, major construction project company workers (many who may get a daily living allowance that is larger than cg fees) etc.

I thought the article was pretty positive, but must admit I cringed a bit reading about how she "squeegees the side of her and husband William's 40-foot American Eagle RV in the parking lot of Casper's east-side Wal-Mart after water was splashed by a passerby." But knowing journalists, that picture and caption were very likely a set-up to give them something to take a picture of and hopefully didn't reflect reality.
We have stayed in WalMart lots a few times, and have stopped for lunch & shopping many more times, but I don't think I would be washing the rig down in the parking lot. I try to keep as low a profile as possible in such places. Paul (KE5LXU), fulltimin'... '03 Winnebago Ultimate Advantage 40E '00 Honda Odyssey Escapees, FMCA, WIT, SMART http://www.pjrider.com |

Wow,
After reading about 6 figure motor homes and having just paid $17K for my TT and maybe another $5K to get it modified the way I want it I feel like poooo folk. I have enough that I could have paid much more but don't think I needed a RV to last 30 years when I'm in my 80's. That's all right folks. I'll park behind a bush or something so I won't embarass anyone with a 6 figure job. But I did like the article anyway. Over the hill and coasting along |

here is an old article about me and Melanie in our "small" rv. We are in Upstate NY now and planning on hosting in the winter in the southwest.

That story and the 17' Casita reminds me of when I first got a travel trailer in the late 40's and early 50's. I don't remember the name of the trailer now but it was about that length. It had an iron, two burner gas cooking stove. and a 5 gallon removable tank for fresh water that had a spigot on it that sat on what little kitchen counter there was. A built in bed across the back with storage under it and a dinnette booth across the front. No bathroom you carried a porta pot. I was working as a carpenter in Bagdad Az. which set out in the desert about a million miles for nowhere. There was a small store there and they did furnish keys to the bathrooms in the school we were building. You bathed with a pan of water you heated on the gas burners and used lots of deoderant. I stayed down there at Bagdad for about 6 months in that little trailer and kind of missed it when I finally went back up home to Flagstaff.
