In my last package from Livingston, I received two Backpacker Magazine issues. Not currently being the Backpacker-type, we called to find out why we got these. Ends up that Reserve America gave our info out and we got to pay postage on the "free" subscription. Can't wait to see what else we will be getting.

Angie signed up for an RA account in the past couple of months instead of using my account. There may have been an opt-out, and I will check on that. In case anyone else gets the Backpacker Surprise, the phone number to call them to cancel is 800 666-3434. The number was nowhere in the magazine itself, but their website gave it up somewhat willingly.

Reserve America seems to send magazines nearly every time you use it. Must be that the companies tie in with them in hope that you will renew when the six months free is up. I got Sports Afield for a time, and also several others. The last two I have called and canceled as I don't read them and don't want to pay postage to ship them.

Thank you for sharing about the Backpacker magazine. It explained why I received a gift of Field and Stream magazine in January! I didn't order it and was really puzzled about where it came from. The good news--I called and cancelled it and received about $6 refund check on the subscription, smile! Not all stories end with bad news!!

I forgot to come back to this thread after sending Kevin a private message yesterday. Sorry!

The mail category that Kevin is enrolled in includes all magazines, etc. In that particular category, Kevin and Angie can make a list of the magazines that they receive and give it to the mail service.

My PM explained all of this information to Kevin so now he knows he does not have to receive extra magazines that he has not ordered. Yeh!!!!

Hugs,
Kellie

Stay away from Backpacker Magazine if possible! I n Mar of 2006 I subscribed for a year, but didn't renew. They sent me magazines off and on which I didn't ask for. A few months ago I got a notice from a collection agency billing me for an unpaid subscription. When I called, the person at BP told me it was their custom to send magazines after the subscription had expired, for the "convenience of the customer". I told them I would not pay for a subscription I didn't order, and didn't believe they would continue to send the magazine more than once in hopes of a renewal. It took me weeks to get it straightened out, but beware of this company, and be leery of any magazine unrequested and unpaid for.

It's not as dire as you make it. Anything you receive that you did not ask for/contract for is, under law, a gift. That doesn't mean that they won't try to collect for it or even badger you but you truly can ignore them. They have nothing that is enforceable against you and, at most , you shouldn't spend more time or effort to 'get it straightened out' than one email or letter of which you retain a copy.

I was so glad to see this post.

Hubby thought our son-in-law had for fun put our name in. He travels a lot and figured he filled out one of those cards on a flight.

Obviously someone missed the opt-out when on the web site over the winter, but these in conjunction with the email ads are quite annoying.

Two issues of Backpacker and one of Business Aviation for us.

Grab a free gmail account to use for all your web surfing needs, if you decide you like something after a while you can change your address to your main e-mail account.

I sure wish there was something similar to gmail for snail mail... :-)

I use a generac web mail for "stuff" but for business, like campground reservations I use my "business" e-mail. We have been "registered" with Reserve America since they started, several years at least. This magazine and email sales is a relatively "new" thing with them. PITA!

Almost as annoying as those darn chain letters folks just love to put our real name and email address on!
