We're in Southwest South Dakota. We've used the AC very little this year. 79 outside right now. It can get hot but sure hasn't this year. The grass is still green. Good life.

Not especially senior oriented, but we are parked in a CG in Indiana now that had outdoor movies under the stars last night - tonight there are ice cream floats in the pavilion with music and dancing - this afternoon there was Bingo. If you like that kind of stuff it is around.

I am on the Washington Olympic Penisular. The fog is rolling in, and the campfire aroma is starting to permeate the evening. The beaches are wild and beautiful, and nightime sleeping is done under down comforters. When I walk the dogs on the beach in the morning, I have a heavy fleece on.

As far as having a pot luck...well, I have gotten a few going by just walking around and saying, "Happy Hour at 430 followed by a potluck, tell your friends." Get your own fun started... others are probably just waiting to be asked.

In Florida, try St George's or St Joe's islands. They can be cooler during the summer, because they are out in the Gulf surrounded by water.

Where are you on the Peninsula? I’ve been in and around Sequim, WA. Can’t remember anything like what you are talking about.

Ocean City...just north of Ocean Shores...long, wide, almost uninhabited beaches. The fog has rolled in, just came off the beach again, and it is cold...very cold.

Thanks. I sailed the Lady Washington in that bay.

My point is, create your own fun instead of waiting for someone else to organize the things you want to do.

A-Men, Rainbow's end has practically shut everything down for the summer, no Saturday Breakfasts etc, Ice Cream Social and Tuesday Lunch is all that's left for the summer.

However, this Sunday we had a potluck and about 50 people showed up, it was great fun, we are starting new meetings and new classes and this is turning out to be one of the best summers yet, in spite of the management.

Great post and subject as we're new reverse snowbirds owning a double-wide in Fort Myers, FL. and move into the motor home for the summer and head north. Because of this years Escapade, we've discovered South Dakota, Wyoming, and now we're in the Denver area. While visiting Rocky Mt. Nat'l. Park, an information sign stated that each 1,000 feet of elevation equaled traveling North 600 miles! That really emphasizes Stan Miler's post about altitude being your friend in the Summers. Yesterday, Denver was 100 degrees so we headed up the Rockies. We drove our dinghy to 12,000 feet altitude and that cooled us off for sure. Ironically, the summit was packed with visitors so we didn't discover any new heat escape plan, darn-it.

Stan,

Try the mountains around Woodland Park. 8500', nice town, close to Colorado Springs for major shopping, WalMart in town.

Thanks for the tip Jack. We're moving south a few miles to Monument for one week. We hope to do the Cog Railroad up Pikes Peak and dinghy down to Royal Gorge. We'll look at the Woodlands Park area for sure.

Sadly, we must then turn the motor home East back to Indiana and some Dr. appoitments, etc.

We have grown to really love Wyoming, Western S. Dakota, and Colorado. Wish we had the time and money to head farther West. Another time hopefully.

When we started full timing back in 2003 we had lived in Jacksonville, FL for 23 years and know a little about what you’re saying. The sun bird places are nothing like the snow bird places. Many folks cannot go up into the high altitude areas because of health reasons. Almost all New England campgrounds are just that - campgrounds - they charge extra for everything. We have stayed at two in Maine that had coin operated toilets and showers. Never seen such a thing in the south. Got into Rapid City, SD in early July a few years ago and it was 105* in the shade. Found a really nice RV Park in Reno that was much like a snow bird park but at 6200' altitude we could not stay long. Stayed at the Grand Forks AFB in ND for a month one time. Mosquitos finely got the best of us. Found a nice campground in Superior, WI. Our next door neighbors had a pet pot belly pig in their MH. Only time I’ve ever seen that. We are always glad to get back to a winter park in CA, AZ, TX, or FL. Stayed in Yuma last year and loved it. Going to stay down near Lake Okeechobee this year before it drys up. We are in SC right now and for reasons beyond our control we have to stay at least another month. Otherwise we would be some place up on the St. Lawrence.

We have been serenaded for the last two nights by a beginning bagpipe player. Until now I wasnt aware how ugly the sound could be from bagpipes by a beginner. I can't imagine one with this level of talent being welcome in any snowbird park.

We just grin and bear it.

bagpipes are great at funerals and terrible at reveille which I had to listen to for a week.

As a Canadian snowbird, I'm sitting inside the house with the A/C cranked up (80's and humid as all get out) and the Rv sitting forlornly over on the other side of the property just waiting for us to hook up and head south. BAGPIPES! We have Ontario, Canada's largest Highland Games right in our home town of Fergus and while I love to hear the massed bands at the games commencement, a few hours of it is more than enough.

What would be the best opposite descriptor for Snowbird, - - - Smogbirds, Swelterbirds, Meltbirds, etc.?

Today is just the tomorrow you worried about yesterday!
