Hello,
We are new to rving. We have made a few trips so that we are starting to enjoy the trailer more and more. We own a 1994 30' Excella. The last significant trip for us was back in April and visiting Civil War sites in Virginia. Tentatively we are thinking of going further from home this Fall. We are talking of leaving Ontario and going South after Thanksgiving for about 6 weeks; leaving the trailer there and going home for December and Christmas. Our thought is to return to the trailer in late January. Do other club members do this and where do they go? Would this be a reason to join this forum? We are clueless about camping in the South and would like to hear ideas about how to do this and where to go ( example Florida or elsewhere) from some experienced campers, to help address our anxiety. Your advice would be truly appreciated. Regards Brian Hobin |

Brian - There are many Canadians on the forum. Some of the ones to "talk" to that come to mind quickly are - the Wandering Bevingtons, PSD Tweaker, Billr. (Many others also) These are guys that I know of that are in the Ontario area. (PSD is Quebec). They can give you the in's and out's of what to do.
Welcome to the forum by the way. Many friendly folk and good answer to questions. We all started sometime. PS - The reason to join the forum is Q/A and sharing (Think BIIIGGG Campfire). No reason is "necessary". Enjoy. Bill and Cecil Lifetime SKP #93811 1999 Ford PSD CC DRW 6sd Manual | Rear Air Suspension | B&D Exhaust Brake | 2000 Newmar 5'er | Mountain Master Air Ride Hitch |

I used to leave my trailer at the Rainbow Plantation in Summerdale, Al. and then return several months later. At that time, the fee was $25.00 an month. There are many places to store an RV once you scout out the area.

Most commercial campgrounds have a storage area within the grounds of the campground. Some even will allow you to park on an electrified site, so the firdge or whatever runs. The charges vary by campground to campground and by what services you need while it is stored.
The campground that I spend much of the winter in has a great number of Canadians that return year after year, many of them volunteer there and do various jobs according to their abilities. george 2003 Newmar, American Star 34' 32RLKS 2005 GMC 3500 D/A Fulltimer 57539 Retired USN SCPO Member Lifetime WHR Lifetime AOR Lifetimer Good Sams, PPA I pay no yearly maintanace fees on any membeships. I'm not sure why you need to contact other Canadians. What you seem to be asking for is general info on traveling in the US? It is not different travelling here in the winter than any other time - except you are generally farther south. If you have some specific questions this is a great place to post them....

Thank you Jackand Danielle for your advice. You are right! Nationality isn't important. There must be rv'rs froom Mchigan for example to travel back for Xmas etc.
I do have some specific questions which I will follwo up with. Simply we are trying to overcome our fear of the unknow and to learn more about a few localities for camping and costs. Regards Brian |

Thanks George; that helps us to better understand this sotroage issue.

Hi Brian and welcome to the forums.
I think you should just hop in the rig and head south any time you want without a care in the world. There is absolutely no reason to have any concerns. You will quickly find many Canadians and northern US folks wandering around the south during the winter months. What are your specific concerns? We probably cannot help you out if you have money concerns but with the US dollar in the tank your exchange rate is looking good. Please stick around and ask all the questions you want. -------------------------------------------- Boogity - Cherish each hour of this day for it can never return. |

Brian - Jack, Sorry if I mislead on anything. For the US portion of it, most any of us can help out Brian on the leaving the trailer part and places to stay.
My reference to other Canadians has to do with Canadian specific issues, such as health insurance, length of time "out of country", etc. Issues that we, as predominately US Citizens, do not have to know, worry, abide by. Welcome to Escapee's Forums, Brian. Let me suggest that the places you may want to check out for winter travels are pretty much any state from Florida on the east to California on the west. Just about all of the states have some winter RV Parks and there are areas of high concentration of them.
Most of those parks also have places that a customer can store his RV when he leaves for a time as well, but you may find that it is just as cost effective to look at a longer term contract on the RV site you stay in, if you plan to spend all winter in one park. Nearly all RV parks that cater to the winter traveler also have monthly rates that decrease as the number of months you stay increases. If you are looking of one park to spend four or five months in, there is a good possibility that you could pay for the entire winter and then just leave the RV parked and set up, with little or no more cost than to move it on and off when you leave for the holidays. Thanks Kirk,
I am showing your message to my wife and we will begin to explore.Do people camp in the winter months at places like Myrtle Beach? Regards Brian |

Myrtle Beach will be a little cool, but a lot of people spend the winter there. Some like the cooler beach weather.
Look online for average daily temps for the months you would like to spend there.... Jack & Danielle #60376 Lifetime Member 2001 Royals International 3741 5th -21,400 lbs 1999 Volvo 610, ISM 400/1450, 182" wb, autoshift 2003 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon behind the 5er HDT Conversion Site and Solar Info |

I've been warned to look for the average DAYTIME temp. If it's 50 at night and 90 in the day you get an average daily temp of 70. Linda Dave & Linda Now living in the Sand Castle, a Leisure Travel Free Spirit Homepage: www.sandsys.org SKP #99753 http://sandcastle.myblogsite.com/ |
