Anyone running the subject software? I was about to download the AVG v7.5 antivirus when I noticed the new, more comprehensive, version 8.0 for only $55/year. Includes firewall, antispan, all sorts of handy stuff.

Would be very interested in any speed comparisons between the two programs. Don't want to buy into another resource hog like McAfee Frown

I have been running 7.5 for about 6 months. Excellent program and it is not a resource hog. I also would like to hear from an 8.0 user.

Jim and Jerry,

I decided not to get the 8.5 "Paid" version after reading the details and seeing that it does basically the same thing as a combination of AVG version 7.5.519 along with "Ad Aware" and "Spy Bot" ....

I have been using these three programs with excellent results..

The reason I went with the three of them is because they are all free and the AVG professional version cost $55.00 to get the same protection..

I guess I'm a cheapskate in some ways.. Smile Smile

TWO CENTS WORTH
The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved.
The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference.

Here's another "thumbs up" to what jharrelson said. I run the same (3) free programs on my PC that he stated with perfect results -- for several years so far.

Save your money and run these (3) programs -- WORRY FREE!

Being an EX Norton devotee, I was looking for something that wasn't such a resource hog as Norton is. After reading here about AVG, I thought I'd give it a try. When I went to their website, they were advertising the new 8.0 and so I thought "What the heck, why not."
DL'd it, tried it for a couple of weeks and sent them an email to ask if we could use it on our two laptops. Got a quick answer back that said it would cost me about 20 bucks more for a "2" license.
After the two weeks, I figured it was okay, and when I went back, found I could buy it for THREE computers for two years so thats what I did. (Not that we have three computers, but the three year price was cheaper than what they had quoted me for two years, just a couple of weeks earlier!
Anyway, it's on our two laptops, seems to work great, nowhere near the resource PIG that Norton was and I'm actually impressed. (Maybe I shouldn't be?) AVG is so restrictive you have to turn it off in order to install new software!! One of our laptops is new and installing software became a real hassle until I figured out the problem. After that.... turn off AVG, install programs, turn AVG back ON, and away you go (but you GOTTA remember to turn it back on!!).
So, for my money, it's worth it. Better than Norton resource wise, seems to cover everything very well, reasonable price and good, quick response to a couple of questions I had. Yep, I'm satisfied.

I've always wondered why Norton was so bad, and so popular. It goes way back to DOS 4 and Windows 3.1.

McAfee used to be the anti-Norton, but sadly they've been Nortonized.

I'm using AVG now thanks to members here who recommended it. Wink

Keep in mind too that Norton sold Norton to Symantec. His designs didn't last long after than and lean and mean was replaced with feature bloat, confusion and copy protection.

I used the free AVG for a couple of years and then the pay when they sent a message that they would no longer have a free version. After a couple of years I changed to Avast that is free and upgrades a couple times a day. I have never got a virus when using Avast.

Their Free one is still available to this day.

I have gotten a message from them that they no longer would support a old version.

But all you had to do was download and install the newer FREE version.

OK, I give up. Biker, you were right. I now recall that the AVG letter said that my version would no longer be supported and I guess that I took that mean that it would no longer be free and I then switched to Avast. I just checked my Computer World and they rate AVG higher than Avast. I have switched back to AVG. I know for a fact that Derek does not use any junk. Razz I will say though, that after a VERY long Avast scan, it did not show that there was a virus present, so Avast must have been doing a decent job.

I too got the message that AVG 7.5 would no longer be updated after May 31, 2008 the way I remember it.
RV: Can not tell from your link if that is the 7.5 version or a free 8.0 version??? No use downloading another 7.5 if it will not be updated???
