When I was growing up there was a malt shop in our town that carried lot's of different candies. I could go in there with a nickel and leave with a bag of candy.
Or I could buy a Babe Ruth candy bar and squander the entire nickel on one item. What was your favorite candy or memory surrounding a candy store. My favorite was Penny candy. I found a site to buy one of my favorites ones, that I have shipped to us. The KITs taffy that used to be three for a penny is now 25 cents each.

little "Peanut Butter Logs" about 2" long and cost a penny each..
They are probably a thing of the past as I have not seen them in 20 or 30 years.. In the 1940's and early 1950's it cost 9 cent to get into the "Picture Show" .... They were not called "Movies" or "Theaters" in those days, they were called the "Picture Show" My mother would give us kids a dime each which meant that we had a whole penny left over to buy either a large Tootsie Roll or a large Bazooka Bubble Gum to eat while watching the movie... Harrumph ! ... just try to buy any kind of candy for a penny today... John John T Harrelson Carson City, Nevada 95 Prowler 5th wheel 93 Ford one ton 4wd diesel TWO CENTS WORTH The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved. The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference. JOHN "the cook" 1987 |

I still like them. Only as "adults", for some reason I don't remember, we started calling them "Dinosaur Boogers" and it stuck. You get some funny looks from other adults when they overhear you saying "quit hogging the Dinosaur Boogers". Baby Ruth and Reese Cup. They had brought out a bigger Baby Ruth than the standard size. If I had enough change in my pocket, I always bought the big one. Still a Reese's Cup freak. But a heads up on purchasing them. Going thru the Wally World check out line, they always have several different packages ( 2 pack, 3 pack, 4 pack, etc.). The more may not be the best buy, I always check the price per ounce. Also sometimes they will have a special promotion that has a larger cup overall. I don't care for them, as it screws up the chocolate to peanut butter ratio. And if the crunchy are available, YES!

Penny candy was great....when I could splurge it was NECCO Wafers & Charleston Chew. My grandmother froze her Charleston Chew bars, then slapped them on the counter. They broke into a bunch of smaller chunks....delicious! I was tickled when I saw they made a comeback....

WOW !.... Charleston Chew... I haven't heard that name in many years Froggi..
and yes, by golly we did the same thing.. freeze them and then slam it down on the table to break it into lots of little pieces. There was also another very similar candy to the Charleston Chew that we did the same thing too.. it was also long, thin and flat... Whadah heck was it called ? Having a senior moment.. Then there was a "Black Cow" sucker that would last forever.. Did any of you as a kid, ever go to a "Taffy Pull" ? Our Sunday school teacher and "CYF" leader used to throw a taffy pull at her house about three times a year for us kids.. it was great.. a dozen kids paired off in two's, standing around in her kitchen with a softball sized "hunk" of soft and warm taffy for each pair of kids. We would pull that taffy until it changed color and then the teacher would roll it out on the wax paper covered table and let it harden up, so she could break it in pieces to share with us kids. Wow.. these type of memories of the "Good Ol' Days" are the ones I like to recall.. John This message has been edited. Hey Jharrellson. . .the peanut butter log you loved is alive and well; manufactured by Atkinson's Candy Company in Lufkin, Texas! My favourite candy that they make is the Chick-O-Stix candy bar. I actually carry a pocket full of the individually wrapped, bite sized pieces (usually bought at Wally Marts located in The South) to treat a low blood sugar (I'm Type I diabetic). Since I'm often not in Dixie, I order Chick-O-Stix by the carton online. I don't have Atkinson's URL; so, just Goggle up Atkinson's Candy.

Love the Chick-O-Stix! We used to buy the Sugar Daddy candy because it would last so long. How it didn't pull our teeth out I will never know.
Mallo Bars. We would buy them for a nickel. Save the coupon cards, 5, 10, 50, 100. When you had 500 points you could send them in and they would send you a pack of Mallo Bars. Chocolate drops and coconut bonbons. Mona The worth of a day |

To this day my favorite candy is "Potato Candy". My grandmother used to make it just perfect. She's gone now, and I'll probably never taste it again, but it was always good.
I'm young enough to learn from the older generation, But old enough to be a good example to the younger generation. |

Malted Milk Balls and licorice.... the real stuff, not the fake that they call licorice today. I'm a real 'chocolate' fan... still, to this day! Wish I had a big old Milky Way right now, though!
